Not put this out before, and thought why not. Hiatus time again, and thoughts seem to dry up. So may be regress a bit. So much has happened since season 4, and with Castiel came the best entrance many have said the show has ever seen. He walked into that barn, with grace, honor, professionalism and charm in abundance. As his character developed, many took Cas to their hearts. Did he steel the show for many, yes I think he probably did. As I gather my thoughts on Castiel, I first see him as a good, kind, gentle alien with a lack of understanding of earths customs and mannerisms.
I can also see why Cas and Dean became the latest ship pairing and took the fandom by storm. As the seasons unfolded Castiel’s appeal grew ever stronger and looking back can see why. Cas shared a bond with Dean because he bought him back from hell, and showed him that he was worthy of being saved.
What have we really learnt about Castiel, and what might we continue to learn about Castiel. I guess are my two main thoughts for this article. I found my own personal love for Cas was very strong to start with, and sensed as many he was a strong good guy. He got behind the brothers and helped where he could, and many times saved their necks. Up to a point, I have loved Cas, until it was decided the writers turn him dark, as per many angels in the garrison. This infuriated me as I thought that was what Cas’s appeal was, that he was good. In our eyes we tend to see angels of the lord as heroes who never put a foot wrong. Who never put a foot out of place. It wasn’t until I came to view Zachariah and Uriel I saw angels in a very different light. Had corruption gone to Cas’s head after all? Was Cas in fact bad all along? And turned good.
My thoughts began to wonder the more Cas wavered, even thinking back to the man who would be king, moved me and thought Castiel was a very strong character. It wasn’t until season 6 where things started to change and go pear shaped for Cas. When Sam was soulless, Cas bought Sam back and much talk surrounded this clip that did Cas bring Sam back without his soul deliberately? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcD8pLrifbU Death went back to the cage to retrieve Sam’s soul. there was something dodgey about Cas’s speech to Dean and have since forgotten why I felt it were dodgey, may be someone might remind me.
He also turned against the boys and worked with Crowley. He with time did a terrible act in pulling down Sam’s wall http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6lzDKJeEww to keep the boys back from following him and Crowley. As he knew Dean wouldn’t leave a sick Sam. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8cqFqTnqK8 All the way through the souls business, I found it hard to care for Cas at this point. I had doubts about who he really was. It wasn’t until Dean found Cas in purgatory and gave that moving speech. That made me fall in love with Cas all over again, that he was protecting Dean, which was why he ran away. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWCutNQItlY
I also remember thinking back, when Cas first came onto the scene that many fans were bothered that it would push Sam’s popularity away. Don’t no if that were ever true. But since being involved in the fandom I have since noticed how many Dean/Cas shippers there are. A huge number. Since we weigh up the bad he’s done to the overall good, decent tasks he’s been involved with how do you really fair Cas’s character. Has he redeemed himself over time, that he is truly sorry for all the corruption and pain he has inflicted on others. Has he come to terms with his past mistakes to really feel apart of the team once again. To me personally Cas was a good guy gone bad. Easily lead, and manipulated by others. Naomi this season is a prof of how others can bend his mind in to working with them. Crowley is also not innocent in Cas’s role over the years, and think he has pulled many of his strings in order to get what he wants out of working with Castiel. So how do you all see Cas. Has he pushed all your right buttons, and can do no wrong in your eyes. Or that he was always dark and mysterious, and shouldn’t be trusted. Was his redemption adequate, in blending back in with the boys. That as far as they are concerned is all water under the bridge.
Bella would love you to think about what Cas means to you, and how you see him continue to fit in the next couple of years. Does he still hold a place also in your heart? How do you also see previous angels were they all corrupt in your eyes.
