So lets then talk about Sam’s worthlessness?

We know throughout the boys history they have both had issues to various degrees, and on different levels, and for very different reasons. So still with the thoughts of the season 8 finale we are still trying to examine Sams feelings in much more detail. I feel like a psychiatrist now but if this is what we have to do to get to the bottom of that moment in the finale, then so be it.

What had started all this off in Sam's mind?
What had started all this off in Sam’s mind?

Yesterday I found my own mind skipping back to Season 3 ‘A very Supernatural Christmas’, and Sam’s speech to his brother. I ‘looked up to you my whole life Dean’. We knew how Sam worships and idolizes his brother and the love and respect he clearly has for Dean. So is Jeremy really going back to his own roots, and looking into the heart of the brothers relationship. Is he getting who these boys really are as humans. What is their weakness, its not so much their strengths but what Sam fears the most. I think he wants Dean to feel proud of him, when we as the viewer know Dean is proud of Sammy and would do anything for his little bro. So why does Sam actually feel so worthless in his brothers eyes. Why does he feel he cannot do a job properly and feels he is worth it in his own eyes. Can we perhaps get a feel of why Sam has these inner problems, and where it really stems from. Can we piece together the mystery of that finale moment where Sam felt enough was enough and he had to resort to drastic measures. Is his mind so troubled that he cannot relate to his own reality any longer. That if something does happen to Dean he knows he will not be able to cope. Perhaps this is why he never looked for his brother, because that fear was so deep that the worst did actually happen. We no in the past that Sam has gone to pieces, and he has got over that messy situation more than once previously. So this time perhaps it was too much that he could not bear any longer. His whole body shut down, and his brain just gave up. If it was a mental issue this would help perhaps in sorting those other little issues out.

If those feelings are so deep which manifest over a long period of time, how can one get over that phobia, how can one begin to understand what Sam actually went through. Psychiatrists would probably say well Sam your seed started in you mind when this, this and this happened. So where do we begin to look where Sam’s physic and phobia began its long and arduous journey eight years later. That chapel scene was monumental to Sam, in his own mind it was wondering over the edge and we could see what a state he was in. Someone whom is clever has a hard time in not being confident in his brothers eyes. So what is it that really started this chain of events which led to last weeks showdown.

Bella would dearly love her angels help in trying to figure out why Sammy our little Sammy feels so worthless. That he cannot over come his profound guilt, that he had to resort in ending it all. Can we solve this little mystery guys, as ever Aunty B is waiting to patiently read your thoughts …..

  1. In real life a person can be perceived by others as being very successful while that person has feelings of worthlessness. It is a mind set that defies reality, but is very real for the person who feels it. The audience and Dean know how intelligent Sam is, and we like to believe that he made bad choices like Ruby for all the right reasons. He thinks he is doing something positive. Of course, the results are usually awful, but Sam doesn’t have foresight powers anymore. So, when a person continually messes up and looks into the eyes of the person he admires, all he can see is disappointment whether it is there or not and cannot see the love behind the eyes. Having trusted Ruby and things going so wrong, Sam wants to “protect” Dean from making a mistake in trust with Benny. As much as he wants to trust Dean’s opinion of Benny, he feels Ruby’s betrayal and wants to save Dean from it and yes, he is a bit jealous of Dean’s bond with Benny. Sam does admit to Dean he was wrong about Benny once he sees Purgatory for himself. So this is another example of Sam disappointing Dean b/c he did not trust Dean’s view of Benny, and someone dies. Watch the performances this season and you will often see Sam’s expression which we now know is that he thinks he impedes Dean. He gladly takes on the trials, not because he is afraid Dean embraces suicide, but because he wants to prove to Dean that he has worth. Often younger siblings feel they need to prove their worth to older siblings when really there is no need.
Psychologically, Sam was just out of having his psyche/soul repaired at the end of season 7. Lucifer had been taunting him about his screw ups relentlessly and although Cas shifts the pain to make Sam functional, Sam has not forgotten his mistakes, hell he even remembers Dean’s in sixth grade and feeling unpure as a small child. However, when Dean disappears by exploding Dick, Sam is destroyed on some level IMO. He enters a fantasy of his own with Amelia to cope with one more screw up. He cannot even think how to look for Dean. Rather than looking and not succeeding, he escapes to not thinking about hunting without Dean or for Dean b/c he feels he will screw up again and he has the out that they promised not to look for each other again. In the end, Sam screws up in his and Dean’s eyes because he did not look for Dean and even though Dean appears to work through it enough to hunt with Sam again, Sam still feels he is a screw up and worthless. If he completes the trials, he regains his worthiness in his own mind. Dean reassures him that brotherly love trumps disappointment. And of course, the more physically ill one becomes, the less able others are to make one feel psychologically okay. So not sure I addressed the issue of worthlessness, but I gave it my best shot. We stay with SPN because it does resonate with us and reflect real emotions. Just my opinion

So well said. I was thinking along these lines. I was right in thinking how angry Sam was over Benny, and then not realizing he should have judged Deans judgement much better than what he did. But I still saw this as Sam protecting Dean and not just have a little tantrum. Your ticking me off and doing the same thing (Ruby/Benny). Your favorite word again symmetry. This season so feels like Season 4 in so many ways. Both finales of course ending in a chapel. But again if a person continues to mess up, and is the one with the brains, does he not stop and think a little harder about those choices. Do the writers not see any character growth here that we have a man maturing, and in a sense loosing those boyish tendencies to cock up. As we often say in life we learn from our mistakes. I hope the next time the writers do see Sam in a different way. I no Leopards rarely if ever change their spots, but my yard stick is he is bright, and I excepted a bit more. May be again reading too much into this, but he’s a 30 year old man and still making wrong moves. (Sorry to be harsh on you Sammy!)

I am beginning to digest where Sam is coming from. I feel for him I really do. I put it down to a lot of torture over the years, being in hell, coming back without his soul, and having a break down whilst riding Lucifer. We cannot begin to understand his mentality, and how he had and still is coping with his lot. He is one shriveled up guy. But in the end love does conquer all, and that comes through regardless of actions. Hugs say it all no matter what has gone on before.

      1. And no matter how mature one gets, one often reverts to initial programming responses to cope under pressure, whether it be toxic relationships, alcohol, substance abuse, bad choices. One hopes that being aware of one’s behavioral patterns, one would side step the toxicity in reaction, but then again being human is always a challenge and Sam has proven that despite his demon blood he is so very human and vulnerable. His pent up feelings, that were held down threw the season(we thought it was OOC Sam) were Sam rethinking his mistakes and consequences. He starts on the journey when he tells Amelia”this was a mistake”. Snap to reality and his past. However, the writers will keep the dynamic btwn the brothers going and we need that. Sam cannot be anyone but Sam except I hope the audience gets a better handle on the character’s traits. Again, I tend to be neither a Sam girl or Dean girl, but I understood Dean better(my personal story) while still loving Sam. I believe I get Sam better now.
I think fans think sometimes that Dean is the complex character the one who is multi layered. But now I think that trend has changed. I believe Sam is the harder one to read. His persona over the years has been consistent but quite dark, and dramatic. Dean I think has been more subdued and easier to pick up. He feels much more laid back than Sam. Whether the drink has done this, could be a possibility. I think its taken me a year to get my head around why Sam didn’t look for Dean. Because it was about the choices he’d made and thought by changing this pattern would perhaps put this chain of events right, and it backfired he still made the wrong choice. He’s taken two steps back instead of two great leaps forward. On re-watch this week, I to picked up on his talk with Amelia, also how he was in that bed scene. How messed up he was. How remorseful he was. Then Amelia decides to drop that bomb shell, in two-days speech which shatters him into a thousand pieces yet again. This poor boy, can the writers help Sammy out here.

  2. I find it hard to believe that Sam feels worthless. He has always seemed to have a higher self-esteem than Dean. I don’t think he went to college to impress Dean but to escape “the life” (although Dean for all his bluster IS proud that he went) Sam was also able to leave Dean on numerous occasions. His pride is usally what gets him in trouble. Killing Lilith because in his eyes he was stronger and smarter than Dean. Trusting Ruby, even though Dean tells him not to. He doesn’t seem to realize that making a bad choice isn’t what is disappointing to Dean……not owning up to it is.

Worthlessness was the wrong word to of used, as others have pointed out. Its an issue of trust and love which is what Sam is hankering for. He desperately wants his brothers approval that what he is doing, was and is the right choice. I don’t think he thinks he’s smarter than Dean. I think he wants to feel equal to Dean. I think he feels he’s out on a limb sometimes. That he has his own mind, but something is stopping him from making that right choice, its like his mind is telling him one thing, and his heart is telling him another. He knows now that he was wrong in choosing Ruby over Dean. Which is why I think he had a hard time trusting Benny, as he was saying to Dean hang on a minute you were ticking me off for going off with a Demon now your doing the same thing with Benny. I still think his anger was over the top, which I still haven’t fully got my head around yet, but I can see were Sam was coming from. Boy these guys do have a lot of issues. 😉

What bothers me about this is if you want someone to trust you maybe you should TRUST THEM first!
They have both trusted Demons in the past (meg and even Crowley a few times) In bitten they trusted that girl werewolf to go and not kill. They trusted Elenore (?) the vampire. They even trusted the antichrist little kid! Why dint Sam question Dean about why he trusted Benny instead of making up his mind immediately? (I know I know the writers love to create angst between them). It should have made him happy not angry that Benny got Dean out of purgatory since he didn’t even try. Benny you saved my brother! (insert manly hug here).
I know barb, this season has been
so odd regarding Sam, why the sudden character change, without any explanation. If this is perception I must be thick cause I’m not getting it at all. I don’t think the writers have really studied either brother, its like they’ve started with a clean slate and started at the beginning. Its just not really making any sense. I understand bits of it but not the whole season. I think Ruby was a real big deal for Dean, and he lost trust in Sam in a big way. Sam knew this, but if he knew this why have the writers continued on this path just for angst. Sam is a bright guy, and this just continues to make him look so stupid.

        1. That’s also one of the reasons I didn’t like the beginning of the season. I know why Carver did it that way but it’s still difficult to watch the brothers be so angry and ugly towards each other. And it did feel more than a little contrived. Dean trying to keep Benny a seccret and Sam wigging out about it.

I hate it when characters on TV have problems that could very easily be solved if only one of them had enough sense to ask a pertinent question. Then the whole thing just feels like drama for the sake of drama. And that’s how the earlier part of the season felt. It could have all been solved if the brothers had just been more open with each other.

Of course we realize now that Sam’s guilt at not looking for Dean was compounded by Dean lawding the worthiness of Benny all the time. Id behave a little irrationally too, I guess.

      2. Strong emotions usually impede open conversations. IMO men tend not to want to talk about their issues with each other very often. Dean pushes things down, drinks, and acts a bit (?) macho to mask feelings. He is a sensitive character that the audience sees, but not many characters do in SPN land. He is also a man of action. Sam’s attempts to have Dean talk about his feelings are usually rebuked with some macho line about not turning into a chick flick or he puts on music loud, and while Sam turns away, we see Dean grimace from inner angst- the audience sees Dean’s emotional side. Sammy sees it when Dean is under the influence of a magic spell and buys into it- as Sam screwed up again- set up again for the finale.
So they both have very different emotions, and show us them in different ways. Sam is the one often to come out and talk. In the past he has tackled Dean about his drinking, and other issues. So he has just as much taken on that leadership sibling role. He can tell Dean sometimes too where to stick it if he has too. That’s what I love about both boys, and how our writers have written them. Each season has bought something different in their make-up to what we have today. They have both been on a journey in watching each others backs, and pushing and challenging each other.

Sam indicates that he will talk about his feelings, but how many times has Dean asked him if he is okay and he says yeh, or turns to the window and shuts Dean out? He lies about drinking blood and being without sleep when he is soulless. We see him raw when he has to kill Madison, so we and Dean know he is emotional. He does not see Dean shed a tear, but we do, so even Sam doesn’t get to see sensitive Dean. The Benny issue has many levels from jealousy, to distrust of Dean’s perception of his vampire friend, to protecting Dean from a monster in Sam;s perception- I addressed these in another essay so I will stop here. But…back to the original point, In Wendigo, Sam is still stinging with revenge for Jessica’s death, and it is Dean who refocuses him, so they have communicated about emotions, just not to well when it comes to their own relationship. I do not think Dean ever thinks he has to tell Sam how deeply he feels for him(except in the finale) since he thinks actions speak for themselves and he has taken care of Sam forever.
This is sometimes why I think Sam doesn’t need to think this way because he must know how much Dean adores his little bro. Is Sam knocking himself and being hard on himself for no real reason. He is the sensitive one after all. So he dwells on this too much and it gets him into trouble in other ways? Trust has always been a big issue with Sam since season 4. But did Dean not realize how much pressure this would also put on Sam. Did he not perhaps think it was obvious bringing home a vampire would cause this upheaval? Even nutty Martin was astounded by Dean’s judgement.

Sam feels(IMO) that he does not need Dean to take care of him as he is a grown man now, but emotionally we usually fall back into childhood patterns. As Sam has been ill this season, he sees that Dean cares for him, but out of a sense of duty and what he used to doing, not because of love. In fact, he rebukes Dean’s attempts to care for him like a child. All of this angst is what makes those brotherly hugs so believable. While the demons, monsters and other things that go bump in the night or day may not be real, the relationship is written very real. The words resonant with viewers as we continue our journey threw the world of mostly well designed scripts and major arcs. Still not forgiving all the way, the witch.best friend episode, but will force myself to re watch to see if I can pick up on Sam’s feelings about himself or if it was just an odd episode to distract us all.
All siblings eventually leave the nest, where they have grown up. So its understandable that Sam feels this way that he is growing up and doesn’t need mothering. Sam’s health has taken knocks in the past too, so we can sense that Dean has always looked out for him. The emotional journey is on par this season, and get a feel of where this is going, and what path they might take next. Sam has probably got a better perspective on his relationship with Dean. Finally they are both on the same page sibling wise. So where do they go from here? What can the writers build on from this point? With this emotional outburst is Sammy cured of his inner demons and past sins that he can walk past that torment? I just hope that the writers don’t take two steps back in the future.

  3. I don’t think it’s worthlessness so much that he is really insecure about Dean’s love for him. I think that stems from he mix-up in their relationship as children, There’s definitely some parental issues in it as Dean sort of crossed that line into being a father figure for him, so like a lot of young men, Sam just wants to know that his father trusts and/or loves him.

We’ve seen this over and over with Sam and I think it started in childhood but it also started really rolling ahead when Dean made a deal to go to Hell for him and he could do nothing to stop it. He couldn’t save him. I think it’s been snowballing ever since with what he thinks is failure after failure. We’ve seen time after time where Sam won’t tell Dean things becasue he’s afraid his brother won’t love him anymore or think he’s a freak and that started far back in season one when he started having visions. It’s a habit that Sam can’t seem to see as he’s still doing it. He wants dean to trust that he’s strong, that he can accomplish things.

I think part of that insecurity is in the way dean talks to people and the manner in which Dean expresses anger. When he’s angry he lets you know it but he also has a jokey way of referring to events that he’s gotten over emotionally but will still tease a person about. Sam doesn’t take it as teasing he always takes dean’s little comments to heart and holds them close.

Yes I have always seen this from Sam’s point of view, that he is seeing Dean as a father figure as well as his older brother. This must have been difficult for Sam to come to terms with, and in some cases have been very unusual. I cannot see many other children living in those circumstances. Unless of course sadly they are in care for what ever reason. I think this is a double edged sword almost that he looks almost up to two different people in Dean, not just the older brother. I think he lost Dean’s trust after season 4 and particularly season 5 will never forget that speech at the start of season 5 from Dean is was so cold, and hurtful. Sam must have really felt that one.

We’ve seen this over and over with Sam and I think it started in childhood but it also started really rolling ahead when Dean made a deal to go to Hell for him and he could do nothing to stop it. I’ve said as much it must have escalated around season 3. He must feel bad knowing that all those events have spiraled out of control, and that he didn’t have any control over. Which must have when you think about made it even harder when he has lost Dean. As its just magnified that whole situation and made it ten times worse than, what it already was. Yes, and this is where people sometimes get the wrong idea as they think that Sam is lying to Dean and he’s not. Sam basically needs to get his confidence back. Dean needs to change his pattern and give Sam some benefit of the doubt. He needs to change here as much as Sam. Next season should be a turning point.

I think part of that insecurity is in the way dean talks to people and the manner in which Dean expresses anger. Sam is the sensitive one, still. This is why I see myself in Sam. Not as much as I used to but I would have taken things to heart so I can relate. I think this is sometimes a trait of most parents they think they have authority and they do, but the child can really feel those words from the adult, and its not very often that situation reverses. This next few months will be a two way street. Sam has got to learn not to bottle stuff up and open up a lot more, and Dean has to learn to believe in his brother a lot more. Its taken Dean along time to get that trust back, but I don’t think he’s fully there yet. We know Dean loves Sam so much and would do anything for him. But something in this relationship has to change.

      1. I think things are changing. At least on Dean’s end. Now if only some of Dean’s new maturity starts to rub off on Sam. We’ve already seen some of Dean’s maturity this season in some of his reactions to people. It’s inconsistent but it is there.Instead of responding in a the ways that the old Dean would have, he’s started asking questions and listening, really listening to the answers. I went back and watched a few episodes from earlier season 8 and I watched him do this with Cas and a little with Benny.

Btw Sam went away to school to escape the life its true but also because I sensed a deep level of terror at what he thought was wrong with him. We had it from Sam that he’s never felt right or normal. He’s always referred to himself as a freak and trying really hard to lead what he thought was a normal life made him feel less freakish. What he longed for was a normal he could never be but at least could pretend when he was around regular folks. Now with the purification of his blood some of the urgency to live normally may subside and he can find out who and what he really is, what he really wants out of life (he’d make an excellent father too) and can move towards finding his real place in the world. I’m hoping Dean’s Newfoundland maturity and his MOL destiny can guide him in this direction. I hope.

There is certainly a change in Dean, as you say they are small, but significant enough to notice. I like little changes rather than a real character overall change which would be odd, as we would think he might be out of character, so I am picking up on those vibes. I am starting to sift through season 8 again, as I can now see it on the TV, and not on my computer which makes all the difference 😉

So the writers really have stayed true to Sam, and keeping continuity in check. It must have been horrible for him to have lived with that condition, and not been really able to talk with anyone about it. When you also think demons were watching over him all the time, like Brady and the school teacher. Very creepy feeling to have found this out god knows what was really going through his mind at the time. Not that he knew of course, but can imagine growing up as a teenager with all his testosterone must have been magnified. Couldn’t have been easy pentting up all those strong feelings. No wonder he does have anger issues. I think the Men of Letters was a god send for Sam I think it really bought him back into the game, and helped make him feel important and having a solid purpose in life. I hope it took a lot of bad stuff away and he seems more contented than he’s been in years. He seems at home in there, and actually feels he belongs some where and has a reason to get motivated again.

          1. Also he really seems to have embraced that as a destiny in the same way he rebelled against Lucifer ‘s plans. I can see a calmness in that character that wasn’t always present. I think the MOL legacy gives Sam an opportunity to focus his mental energy in ways that just hunting alone didn’t do. (He is an impressively intelligent character, btw, when the writers remember that.)

I 100% agree but I sometimes wonder with all his brightness why he still continues sometimes to do stupid things. Or sometimes doesn’t even bother. I get what the writers are doing with the boys now more so than I did before. This season is sinking in much better. The men of letters was a real bonus for Sam, and I think it marked a real change within him. As we’ve said its given him a new focus besides hunting, which can only be a good thing. I think Sam is one who needs a challenge now and then. He is an orderly type of person any way and I can imagine him really feeling a sense of belonging, and also for Dean. They both need a firm base, as well as an interest and the has achieved the best of both worlds. Yes, I too wish the writers would occasionally recognize that Sam does have a brain.

              1. ” 100% agree but I sometimes wonder with all his brightness why he still continues sometimes to do stupid things. Or sometimes doesn’t even bother.”
                I wonder too!

I wonder often what the writers are doing, and I wish I could get my head in that writers room, as at the moment we are only picking up half of the story since we have two or more seasons to go. Its still a blur.

                1. My mother used to say to me when I was much younger “Even monkeys fall out of trees.” Shed do this whenever her scholarships /a 4.0 grade point daughter would do something stupid like forget where she left her belongings or fight with her own clothes and lose.
Hey even smart people are often blindsided by their own relationships. People often can’t see what they’re right in the center of.
That’s true Ikeke, but he keeps repeating the same stuff. If he feels this strongly about Dean and failing him, why didn’t he at least try and look for his brother. The writers haven’t really thought this through. Its not just that incident, its a whole chain of stuff in Season 8 that feels so wrong.
