The Great Escapist?

Was all this played out in Crowley’s mind and they were actually an illusion?

Take your minds back to fake Sam and Dean when they knock on Garth’s door on the boat and Kevin sprays them with Holy Water. I take it these were demons, who were pretending to be Sam and Dean if so why didn’t their skin burn when Kevin sprayed both Sam and Dean? Did I miss something?

Did I miss something, were fake Sam and Dean Demons or something else.
As their skin did not burn when sprayed holy water?

Yesterday I put up a thread on the forum and they came back with some interesting scenarios see what you think, and see if their theory is legit. I like the idea of them not being demons but Shape-shifters as they didn’t react to the Holy Water.

  1. I always thought it was because Crowley created an illusion of the boat (and everything inside) and planted Kevin in it. Thus the water in the water pistol wouldn’t have been Holy Water and wouldn’t have burned the demons.
Hi Emily and welcome. Yes your right, it took me a while to realize this at the time and agree with you. Most stories on SPN I get right away but this took a while to get my head around. It was all fake hence why the pistils didn’t work on the demons.

  2. If the boat was fake, and everything was under Crowley’s control, no way Kevin had real holy water. Now, it appears that the fake Sam and dean through fx wobble, so it might be that they are perceived as Sam and Dean by Kevin because he is inside some sort of reality created by the King of Hell- the director. Now, isn’t that what J2 do every time the director says “Action” which makes two points. 1. the director/s metaphor is carried forth as a kudo to French Mistake and 2. Carver’s theme of perception is ever present in season 8.
All is not as it seems scenario is back then. 😉 So what would Kevin have actually been spraying? As Ikeke mentioned a borax solution or something else? So Kevin isn’t fake its just everything around him is? Oh apart from Crowley of course.

  3. I never saw it. I like the idea of Crowley having shape-shifters on call but my theory was that Kevin had sprayed them with the Borax mixtures used on Leviathans. If he was spraying them with Holy Water then the shape-shifters theory is logical and elegant.
I thought it was a cool idea. But just assumed they were demons with Crowley being a demon and all it just felt a natural flow. I hadn’t thought about the borax solution but that was only used as you say on the Levi. So I wouldn’t have assumed this. This was why I natural thought it was Holy water he was spraying. So this means they weren’t demons? interesting.

    1. You know, this is a very good question. What they are depends on whether or not Kevin was spraying Holy Water on them. But their appearances weren’t shape-shifting I don’t think.
Now you’ve come to mention this again, I don’t think they were shape-shifters. Why would they be an entirely different type of species? Why would Crowley go to all that trouble in fooling Kevin. He’d sussed out they were not Sam and Dean early on. It would appear to make sense that they were demons as Crowley could manipulate them more easily if they were his own kind. Would Shapes-shifters take orders from a demon?

At the time I thought their appearance as the brothers was an illusion cast by Crowley but that would make them demons. Of course Kevin could have simply been spraying plain old water that he thought was Holy Water especially if it was supplied by Crowley If he was being held by demons then they most certainly aren’t going to supply him with real Holy Water.
But if they were an illusion the Holy water wouldn’t have worked any way would it? That’s also a fair point. But would Kevin have tested it before he used it?
