So how did the new episode fair?

Did you enjoy it, please spare me no details I want to know everything. Some are saying that Death was imaginary and not real in Sam’s head. Some thought how the angel possessed Sam was cool. I have also read that Jimmy Novac is still present in Cas’s vessel?

What was Cas like Human?

Most of all I am so into the big SECRET! what went down and did Dean do some MASSIVE deal? Was it a good season opener, as they usually are? Do you still have questions which have not been answered? Did Cas meet up with Sam and Dean or not? I guess it won’t be that quick. I also here through the grapevine that Cas falls in love. Uh oh not again!! Different person this time are we surprised?

The forum is still bashing Sam. He is the number one target of special snowflake at the moment, which I have to say is a horrible expression to use. They are also saying he has a big ego. I cannot see this being possible, are they over exaggerating? So I guess Sam is up and about now, and that Ezekiel possessed Sam and healed him from the inside. So would the angel have lived? What did we all think of him. Was he HOT!!

What did Dean do to SAVE Sam?

Death I presume has asked Sam the question are you staying or going? So not sure where this went. Some are also saying that Ezekiel posed as Death so Death wasn’t Death?

Did Ezekiel pose as Death? Was it a set up?

So give me the low down, or the high down. Marks out of 10, and what they could have improved on. Did they stay true to canon this time and not go overboard? What were your favorite moments and your least? Can’t wait to here your verdicts.

  1. Julian Richings (the actor that plays Death) SAYS it wasn’t the real Death it was in Sams imagination, which is what i thought all along. There’s a thread about it on IMDB
Barb I transferred that message over I think on Jade’s post. I know the one you mean. That’s good enough for me, if the actor says it wasn’t him. The clue was him not eating as he always eats in every scene. But I still don’t think that Sam has a big ego because of this.

  2. Hi Bella,
I enjoyed the premiere and thought it was a good start to the season. So here is what I thought

    Hi Jade…

    1. Regarding Death, I didn’t think he was part of Sam’s imagination, in fact it wasn’t until I read the boards and saw so many people saying they thought it that I actually considered it, so I am not sure if that’s what the writers were trying to show us or if it was a misinterpretation. People just felt it was Sam’s ego talking, and I did not get that, but who knows. The scene between Sam and Death was emotional I almost cried because Sam was so determined to let go, and Ezekiel allowed Dean to hear the conversation between Sam and Death and I felt bad for both brothers…:-( Also it did seem to me that Death noticed Dean, he looked annoyed when Dean showed up like “Oh God, not this again!” LOL so I think Death was really there. Also I saw people saying Death would normally have just reaped Sam without his consent, but this has never happened in the past, most of the time they are allowed to go or stay as a spirit, so I don’t think this went against canon.
This was one of the clips I did get to see on you-tube along with Dean and Esekial and Sam in the hospital bed. So I’m not even sure what I’ve seen if its in sequence or not. I should get to see the show tomorrow at some point whipppeeee!!! I’m not sure exactly what they meant about Sam’s ego, maybe thinking that he thought he was full of his own importance thinking that Death would personally come and reap him, which is silly. The reason I think personally its in Sam’s head is because Sam is as we know unconscious, on that hospital bed. If Death were real Death would visit Sam in the hospital. So to me Sam is dreaming this its all inside his head. Whilst Sam is out of it the writers need to give Jared something to do, so why not include imaginary Death. Some also said that the angel was posing as Death to get Sam to say yes. It didn’t feel to me like the real Death! The atmosphere looked hazy just like the picnic scene from last season with Sam and Amelia. Carver also said each actor this episode would also have to face their own inner demons.

    2. “I also here through the grapevine that Cas falls in love. Uh oh not again!! Different person this time are we surprised?” As for Cas falling in love… that doesn’t happen in this episode, maybe people were referring to future episodes? Anyway the only thing that confused me about Cas is he didn’t know he lost his powers… lol Cas really is vapid sometimes. Anyway I liked the scenes with him and the Angel girl, a lot of people said those scenes fell short but I thought it was pretty good, kept my attention and I like the story line.
I heard this ages ago too, also Dean is supposed to be hitching up with a lady too. I don’t think its this early on in the season. But when he crashed the car and that man came to help him he had crazed his wrist and he felt it. So at that point he must have known he was powerless? A lot have said his story is panning out nicely. So I am pleased to hear this. 😉

    3. “Most of all I am so into the big SECRET! what went down and did Dean do some MASSIVE deal? “
And sense it’s already been mentioned here about Dean’s secret, well basically Sam gets tricked into making a decision I don’t think he would have made, and once he finds out what Dean did you can expect more brotherly angst. Anyway I like Ezekiel and hope he doesn’t have a hidden agenda for wanting to help Dean, since the other angels weren’t so willing to help them.

I saw this bit on one of the you-tube clips. He did inform Ezekiel that Sam would hate me doing this. As it goes against everything about him. So Dean knew how important that was to Sam at this point. I know, I just hope its no where near as bad as last season. But this year it appears to be on Dean, and not on Sam? I like Ezekiel too. ( I am having real trouble trying to spell this angels name …. ) Why can’t angel names be easy to spell!!! 😉 Cas did mention that he was one of the good guys, so I hope we can take something from this remark? He’s got to be a good guy for once.

    4. “The forum is still bashing Sam. He is the number one target of special snowflake at the moment, which I have to say is a horrible expression to use. They are also saying he has a big ego. I cannot see this being possible, are they over exaggerating?”
I know the forum is so bad, I half expected it to be. The summer has been lovely and swimming along nicely, and everyone has got on really well. Hardly any bitching. Then all of a sudden there appears to be loads of new posters. Randomly asking controversial questions as if they want to stir it. I so hate that terminology for Sam it really makes me angry. They are so over exaggerating. They know what buttons to press.

I waited until I saw the show before I went to the boards since some people usually see the episodes 3 hours before I do on the east coast, and I didn’t want the show to be spoiled or see the arguments beforehand. I felt like everyone on the board had a total different perspective of the show then I did, like Sam’s big ego, Dean getting side lined again… etc… and honestly it really bummed me out, thread after thread was so negative and people getting so mad they started cursing people out, I knew people were going to be unhappy because that’s a given, but it was over the top IMO. It’s like people hate every single episode, but they keep watching every season… I don’t get it, and they sent hate to one of the writers whom I felt bad for. Honestly the episode was not that bad, and they hate Sam so much so that they keep hoping the character gets killed off… etc… like why does this show appeal to them? even if they only watch for one character they still have to “endure” Sam and Dean being supposedly sidelined which I don’t agree with, but whatever.
I cannot resist coming on to the board first thing. It’s like its an addiction, I have to see what’s going on. I bet that is a bummer for you having to wait later when others have seen it before you. I tend to forget about different time zones. The Dean stuff has got me down I have to admit, how they are boycotting the show etc and writing to the writers. Its been a bit much. Its horrible how the poor writers seem to cop it. I know a lot of fans tend to moan about the writers but on the whole I think they do a pretty damn good job. I can’t understand why they want Sam killed off. I was bothered when Cas first came on the scene how this would side-line Sam back then, but it didn’t. Now Dean/Cas shippers are as bad as ever they were. I love both of them and always have. To me the show is about two brother on the same road trip. Dean has a story, a lot of them are polarized and cannot see it.

Anyway I give the episode a 9/10 and it looks like we got great ratings, I hope those stay up. I also read the live tweets with Jared and Jensen while the show was on 🙂 It was pretty cool, I love it when they do that.
A high mark, sounds like its worth watching!! I wish the rating were much higher when I see what ratings others shows pick up, in the 4m mark. Considering the show has three hot leads, what is there not to love about it. I still never got round to reading Jared’s tweets, I read he was going to nip back to his trailer between takes and type away, so he obviously did do just that. It is rather COOL! isn’t it ….

I thought he had NO reaction to Dean showing up (although to be fair Death doesnt really react to anything hes a very laidback dude lol) and he didnt interact with Dean at all. He also says its your choice to Sam regarding living or dying. NOT your choice if you want to come or stay and be a spirit.
Im pretty sure that Death was in his head just like Bobby and Dean were I cant see Death being so complimentary. Hes always said that Dean and Sam were affronts to the natural order-thats why he had Dean wear the ring. He also said humans were bacteria (not sure of thats the right word).

This is all JMHO as the scenes were very ambiguous.

I think Death was supposed to be real but was written out of character and it caused confusion to viewers. Anyway I respect your opinion, but I interpreted it differently.

The scene was written VERY ambiguously leaving a lot of room for different interpretations. My problem is with the big boss reaping ANY human himself LOL

                  1. I think the writers chose to use Death to up the ratings, since its a popular character, and also to show Sams desperation in wanting to go, and they could not use just any reaper to show Sam making a deal to never come back.

According to Julian, the fact that Death was not eating in the scene in 9 x 01 was a bit of a clue that he was a figment of Sam’s consciousness and not actually there in physical form. Also, “well played” was his favorite line.
This was tweeted by Julian Richings and found this on the forum others might have missed which I found very interesting. So this is a huge clue so did Sam really want Death to be his reaper, or not.

But remember in Season 7 when Bobby was dying, he was unconscious and he was trying to get away from the reaper. That was also in his head and the reaper was real, even though the reaper didn’t show up in the hospital. I admit I could be wrong, but that’s why I thought Death was really there, It seemed the writers were taking notes from the Bobby episode. JMO
Jade that’s actually a good valid point. Its surprising over time what has been said on the show. See my note above that I found on the forum.

“I know a lot of fans tend to moan about the writers but on the whole I think they do a pretty damn good job. I can’t understand why they want Sam killed off.”
I think this episode they really showed their creative imagination. There were areas that were really funny, and none of us would really have thought about. Sam is and always will be a huge part of this story and show its a shame they don’t get this.

Yeah I think the writers do a good job also. And yeah the hate on the board got to me, I actually got frustrated today and responded to your post about that mean comment from another poster. Anyway hopefully there are still a lot of fans happy with the show.
I noticed, thanks. I would never be horrible to another poster. Some have that nerve I don’t. That unfortunately is the down side of social networking, it can get nasty. If I can help others I do. There’s no need to be like that. Try not to let it get to you, best way …

      1. Also Death may have been real and not in Sam’s imagination because he may be grateful for Sam having done what he wanted him to do, which is put Lucifer back in the cage. When he was talking to Dean in the diner he seemed very, very confident that Sam would be able to do it and free him from Lucifer’s bond. Reaping sam himself may have been his way of showing appreciation. He certainly seemd like he was about to reap him. Sam was about to go with him to …wherever.

I don’t have a problem with Death showing up to reap Sam. Death would consider it an honor to reap him or Dean. yes, he finds then annoying and upsetting but there’s also a large part of him that admires The Winchesters too.

I heard what Death said to him and it wasn’t necessarily egotistical Sam thoughts. It could have been Death simply saying whatever he he thought Sam wanted to hear. I think they were just being nasty about Sam, what ever chance they get to jump on him, they will.

        1. yeah I agree with what you said here. The Winchesters averted the apocalypse, and Sam jumped in the cage, so that’s probably why Death came for him and felt honored to reap him. If it were Dean I think Death would have come for him too, because both brothers are hero’s. So yeah I really don’t think it was Sam’s huge ego talking. Also I watch the premiere again last night and Death and Dean/Ezekiel actually did exchange words. So many ppl kept saying Death never acknowledged Dean, but he definitely responded to Dean more then once from what I saw, so yeah I think he was really there.
See my note posted to you earlier from Julian Richings he says he wasn’t there, and others have said that was good enough for them. I so hope Death would reap both brothers, considering they come as a pair.

  3. I actually liked this episode, which is pretty good when you consider I usually hate this writing duo. It was a decent episode, not great.. Not as awesome as opening of Season 8. Mostly this episode was laying the groundwork for the rest of the season and getting all the characters in place to move on from this point.
Is the writer Singers wife and co author again? Oh boy! I think the season 8 premier was slow in parts though. Maybe this is Carvers style from now on. He’s build up to the finale again. I like this style as seasons take time to develop so hope all goes well from here on in.

I too am confused over whether or not Death was real or in Sam’s head. And yes, Death did briefly interact with Dean/Ezekiel. Since it wasn’t really Dean I’m not surprised that Death didn’t say anything to him. Death would have known it wasn’t Dean anyway. I enjoyed Cas scenes and I liked that his situation wasn’t played for laughs. The woman that you’ve seen him with is not the one he falls in love with. She wants to possess that body since Cas is now mortal (Cas rejects this very forcefully.) and I saw no sign of Jimmy Novac. Some people may have been confused because they saw Cas drinking water and bleeding. But no, that is not Jimmy.
Yes but if Death wasn’t real, why would he necessarily say anything to Dean? Good about Cas, heard nothing but goodness about this. So I’m happy 🙂 Ah, so its sounded a rather confusing episode from the jump. I saw the women whack Cas over the head with a plank of wood. I would still like to know what happened to Jimmy, and often think about him and his survival?

It starts with an imaginary scene of Sam and Dean in the car where Dean informs Sam he’s dying and that he should fight. It reminded me of the episode The Man Who Knew Too Much. Sam doesn’t believe him at first but then imaginary Bobby shows up, which was really cute. He’s as surly as Sam remembers him. It is primarily Bobby who is acting as Sam’s reaper until imaginary Dean kills him and then Death shows up. Still not sure if it was really Him or a reaper that just looked like him.
I am so chuffed that Bobby came back in a sensible way. At last they are learning. 🙂 TMWKTM was a good episode. We did wonder on the forum if Bobby might come back as a reaper, so they were right to assume. Good thinking!! So the angel wasn’t posing as Death then since he was in Sam’s mind so to speak. Boy this is confusing when you’ve not seen it. 😉

Dean makes the bone-headed decision to save Sam by praying to any angel that can reach him first, in his attempt to save Sam. Naturally some less friendly angels show up and kick his butt in an effort to find out where Cas is located. Apparently some Angels are finding hosts and some aren’t and just have to wait. A lot of the ones with hosts are just pretending to be human most of the time, I’m guessing. But they all blame Cas, don’t know where he is and are out to get him.
I gathered this as much angels would be after him. I am really interested in how they all get back to Heaven. Don’t know why this is appealing to me so much. I guess it would be hard to find Cas if they don’t have their powers. I cannot imagine the number of angels that must have fallen, so all this lot after one man, Cas really has a job on his hands. Who’s going to help him out, Kevin?

According to the interview between Jensen and Jared, Ezekiel is going to be around from time to time, possessing Sam without his knowledge. Yes, Dean’s story this season is more reactionary as we get to watch how he responds to mostly being alone without his usual crutches of Sam and Cas and Bobby. Anything you read about Sam is mostly just bitching and whining and Sam hatred so I’d just ignore it. People who hate the show and/or Sam but can’t seem to stop themselves from watching it. What’s happening now has always been the pattern for the show and I don’t understand why these people aren’t used to that yet.
I guess like a top up kind of person to refuel his body? I’ve already ignored a lot of the threads today as there still at it calling him snowflake Sam. They are saying that Dean loves Sam, but Sam’s not showing it back, and they just want the brotherly love to be balanced. From what I’ve read and picked up on, it sounds a really crammed in episode with lots to get your head around. Which is what I loved about last year. So I am really looking forward to it.

One of the most interesting scenes is Sam touching imaginary Dean’s face. It stood out to me because Sam rarely initiates physical affection between the two of them. It’s almost always Dean. I found that moment especially touching and beautiful because it’s so rare that Sam shows his love for Dean that way. Watch for it.
I will do, but doesn’t anything happen to imaginary Dean when Sam touches him? That is rare, we see lots of hugging but not much facial contact. Maybe it was Sam’s way of reaching out to Dean. Awwwh.

    1. I’m still thinking Death was in Sams imagination. Death thinks humans are low forms of life. He would NEVER fawn over ANY human. I thought Dean 2 was really Dean or was Dean speaking threw Ezekiel-he knew too much to be just Ezekiel-he says to death if I knew you were here Id have brought some cronuts-Dean, not Ezekiel, knows of deaths love of fast food. So I think-
-The guy in the truck that helped cas was God
      -Death was Sams imagination
-Sam AGREED to Deans plan without knowing what it was so for him to get pissed later will be unfair.

cronuts What the hell are they a cross between a doughnut and something else?
Obviously something that Death loves to eat, a bribe I guess.
I think this about Sam too now. The more I read about this. Why was it so confusing to understand didn’t it come over very well on screen?

      1. In Cleveland Ohio they are a cross between donuts and croissants. Here it’s usually a croissant with some sort of sweet glaze on top and sometimes there’s a filling too.I blame our Polish and Eastern European neighbors for this horrible temptation. Tomorrow ,at my local sotre there will be chocolate glazed croissants (cronuts) for sale.

Barb: where did you get the idea that the man in the truck was God?. I didn’t catch that at all and .I thought that was Ezekiel talking threw Dean. Good catch on the cronuts thing. (Incidentally ,what are cronuts in your neck of the woods?)

Bella ;Cas doesn’t have any power as a mortal and the angels are not as powerful as before and some of them, like Ezekiel, are severely weakened by their fall, so it’s going to be very hard to find Cas. Like finding a needle in a stack of needles.
Got you! Oh I can imagine that a huge number will be injured and in much pain as they can now feel injury where they didn’t before. I guess I tend to forget America is such a huge country 😉 I’ve still not seen it yet, and only briefly saw two clips of the angel and Dean by Sam and showed he was badly injured. I like the feel of this guy a lot. He comes across as a good guy and Cas said as much.

The woman that whacks cas on the head is the same woman who wants to possess that host that Cas is wearing. Since Cas is now officially human, she does need his consent to do it. She doesn’t get it
        Right! But still sounds confusing…

.It’s pretty trippy episode. Sam is possessed and talking like Ezekiel and he and Dean decide to wipe this from Sam’s memory. It’s not the possession I think that’s going to be a problem. It’s going to be the mind-wiping that will probably piss Sam off. Hopefully this is not something that will be drawn out through the whole season. Dean will confess, Sam will be mad for a little while or not be mad at all and they’ll have bigger problems than his emotional issues With any luck neither of them will die at the end of the season. Or maybe they will both die and end up in Hell or Purgatory or something and have to escape.. Something different would be good. After a while though all this dying just gets really funny..
But to me this sounds like a rip off of Lisa and Ben during season 6? I can see Sam going off on his own again as he usually does when he’s annoyed with Dean. Fans don’t like this when the boys are separated. But its such a biggy that it will be interesting to see how Sam deals with it. I hope its not drawn out like soulless Sam was.

Honestly my husband came up with that. I said while watching -wow that guy is so nice. Cas isnt even being grateful and he keeps trying to help him. Hubby goes cause hes God and then the guy calls Cas kid like he was his son and I agreed. There are some people on the boards that were saying it too.

Cronuts are the same here-never had one 🙂

I agree. I was fine with the possession because Sam said yes to whatever plan Dean had, but wiping his memory not so good. I really dont think it would be a dealbreaker as Sam obviously (to me anyway) wanted to be saved from dying (or he wouldnt have been having all those conversations in his head). Its not like he said Dean Yes as long as your plan isnt being possessed.

Again, have to re-watch. Cas was great and treated seriously pretty much and was very interesting. Bye Bye trench-coat! Not loving Sam/Ezekiel so far.
I saw your recent post after this one. So not sure if this relates. I’m still thinking Death was in Sams imagination. So by the sounds of it Sam won’t have the ego, which I’m pleased about. Don’t know why the forum thought this? This was why probably he didn’t say anything to Dean because it was imaginary. Remember kids when they have imaginary friends? Poor trench-coat, that became just as important on the show as the Impala!! 😦 Maybe it will come back by popular demand? Pleased again about human CAS! About time he got a decent story too.

    1. Yeah this show has a knack for finding “hot” men. (I’ve noticed that all my favorite shows have this quality, too. I wonder why that is.)

I do like Ezekiel and want to believe he’s as good as Cas says he is but Cas has been wrong before so I’m not taking his word for it. In fact, Cas is almost always wrong about something. Maybe being human will teach him to be a little less trusting or something. I suspect that Cas will be doing a lot more angel-killing this season, anyway.

Yes, I liked the idea of good and bad angels. Apparently the angels have some powers. they can still talk to each other mind to mind and still hear prayers spoken by humans. They’re still pretty strong and fast (at least the ones who had not fallen seem pretty much as before.)
So really when you think about it Metatron’s plan wasn’t overly successful, he got the angels out of heaven but wasn’t successful in taking their powers away either. So his plan wasn’t such a great one after all …..

I just found this clip on You-tube, still not seen the show yet. From what I could make out. Its all in Sam’s head cause he’s in a coma. So how could Death have visited Sam in a coma?

Hm, if Jimmy Novac is still inside the vessel, I missed that. I’m going to try to fit a re-watch in again today though. Cas has not met up with the boys, but he talked to Dean on the phone. The thing I found interesting about him being “human” was that they didn’t treat it as a joke as though so frequently do things with his character. He learned about pain and thirst — some of the basics of what it means to be human. I liked the way they did that.
I’ve picked up on this fact too about Cas being human. I am rather pleased about this, that they haven’t used him for comedic effect like they normally do. Its a real treat to see Misha do something a little out of his comfort zone. We can see him as an actor do something different. Its like Superman as he was like this when he lost his power. So the show is doing a similar type of theme.

No, Ezekiel didn’t post as death. Dean appeared twice in Sam’s head. The first time, he was just the part of Sam that wanted to fight to stay alive. The second time, it was Ezekiel posing as Dean to get Sam to agree to live. Ezekiel was weakened by fighting the other angels and by possessing Sam, he can heal both himself and Sam. Dean has to keep it a secret from Sam or Sam might eject Ezekiel and then he’d die. Dean intends to tell Sam when he’s strong enough. So, yeah, Dean has made another ‘deal’ to save Sam without Sam’s consent.
Oh, right okay. I did pick up this from the YT clip. Actually sounds rather clever for SPN? But how long is the angel going to be in Sam. Forever!!! I think the writers haven’t done a bad job of this by the sounds of it. I see now why Sam will be pissed, oh dear round 2.

    1. Yeah, Ezekiel told Dean before the fact that once Sam was healed, he would leave, but I don’t trust that. Dean talks to him later and he convinces a very conflicted Dean not to tell Sam the truth because Sam will be able to evict the angel and then Sam will die. He also says he can erase Sam’s memories. I actually have more problems with this part of the plan than Dean tricking Sam into allowing the angel in. We don’t know how long the angel will be in Sam or if he has ulterior motives. Dean knows that secrets always come back to bite him on the ass, and he knows how Sam felt about him having Lisa and Ben’s memories erased. I’m just afraid this is all going to get very ugly at some point.
I think it will get very ugly once Sam finds out. Some were really annoyed about Dean doing this, almost like its raping Sam. Which felt a bit strong but could see where they were coming from. How can Sam evict the angel, that sounds really interesting? This is exactly what I thought we don’t know how long he will be inside Sam? For all we know Ezekiel could have tricked Dean too, and wanted Sam’s vessel for a reason, knowing he’s Lucifer’s true vessel. Maybe Sam gives him a lot more power because of this? I was really shocked about the mind whip especially when Dean told Sam never to talk about it again or he’d punch his lights out. I’m not so sure I’m looking forward to this. 😦

Of course it will! As Dean says “what show have you been watching?” LOL
Supernatural of course ….. But I think it will get ugly.

        1. Oh yeah, I know, and I’m okay with that as long as it isn’t just more of the same old ugly we’ve gotten time and again.
I am pretty certain the boys will split up again, and they will get back together again for the finale, just like last season. I so hope Carver think of something different.

  6. The opening title is a beautiful piece of art work and probably reflects the arcs this year. The episode was one that laid the groundwork for the season. Not my favorite writers. Interesting and watchable, but not the finest opening of a season. Thinking it will go up from here.
I saw the artwork today and thought wow, that is up market for SPN. They are going way over budget this year on promo stuff. So you thought it wasn’t the best. Ummmh.
