Dean going DARK?

Quick question again today working late. I read on the forum yesterday something interesting about Dean. Its been mentioned that Dean works with some unsavory characters to get Sam back. Could Dean actually work with Crowley and be his dealer? That thought from a poster really got me thinking. Crowley after all is the one who free’s Sam from Gadreel (we think at this point). We know Dean is possibly going to a dark place very soon. So do we wonder if Dean’s downward spiral into darkness over loosing Sam again appears and he re-treads over his recent decisions. Or that he gets up to his old tricks and goes to the dark side facing all types of shady characters to do Crowley’s bidding, in return for him helping Sam out.

Or could he actually be possessed by Abaddon. We’ve never seen Dean possessed and it would be interesting to see Dean go dark and do unthinkable things. But would this be too late in the day to reveal dark possessed Dean? Who would save the day if this happened, as both boys would be possessed. But then we’ve also seen the clip in the dungeon with Crowley so I am not sure if Abaddon’s possession would be viable now since we’ve seen that clip.

  1. I find the concept of Dark Dean to be very intriguing. It seems as if he will be aligning with Crowley and this new character Cain in the second half, which is really exciting. Jensen surely would be able to handle any task that they put in front of him, so seeing Dean going down a similar path that Sam went in season 4 would be really fun and exciting to see. We’d get a bit of role reversal, too, with Sam being the one who needs to reign Dean in for a change and I quite like the idea of this. I could see Dean taking Kevin’s death hard enough to where his quest for vengeance might cause him to do some things that are normally uncharacteristic for him and I really hope that they do decide to explore that side of him.
This is what I’ve been wanting to see happen, is that Sam reigns Dean in from this dark place to show others who thinks that Sam does care for Dean in a big way. I think it would make all the difference if we saw a piece of this action. Not only that as I’ve said before we know Jensen needs something meaty to get his teeth into, and I think he’s carried so much baggage within him over the years its got to come out and to a head sooner or later. If anyone can bring Dean back from the brink of desperation then its Sam. It would make great TV. I think in the episode review they said Dean seeks revenge for Kevin’s death this is why he goes unwillingly off with Crowley.

As far as him being possessed is concerned, Jensen himself has stated several times that he would rather not ever have Dean adulterated in that way. Dean’s humanity is the center of the show, whereas Sam is the one with the Supernatural connection. So for them to have Dean become possessed it would throw things off balance in a lot of ways. I have mixed feelings on the subject. While I agree with Jensen about Dean staying pure, I also think at the same time that the only way for him to fully understand the gravity of what he did to Sam in the season premiere would be for him to know what it’s like to lose control of his mind and body through no fault of his own. To have his autonomy stripped from him the way that Sam has several times over would bring a level of understanding to Dean that could help the brothers relate with one another in a way that could help them both move past Sam’s most recent possession.
Well my argument has always been why were they both made supernatural vessels if Dean is supposed to be the human influence throughout the show’s history. It would be a fitting way to end the season and like your take on it. Dean going dark would help him see it from Sam’s point of view and understanding some of Sam’s past mistakes too as well as his own. It takes a big hit like this to help them both through it. One thing this show has never done is get the boys to sit down and talk man to man in a motel room for a whole episode and show us they can open up and move past it, not dwell on it. They have each other but they don’t always make use of one another when they should. The relationship is the core of this show and if that goes pear shaped what are we left with.

    1. Well said. I totally agree.

(Okay I’m having a squeee! moment but I’m totally geeking out about Tim Omundson being on the show. It will be so great to see him and Jensen together.)
I’ve heard a lot about this actor, but I haven’t got a clue what he’s been in and never seen his acting. He looks a right nut job and Jensen/Dean looks as though he will have his hands full when we see that fight scene that took 9 hours to film, I can’t wait to see this.

I think he fully understands the gravity of what he did. I don’t think he did it lightly.

I want a human Dean not a supernatural Dean. I agree with Jensen.
But I still don’t get why the writers made Dean Michael’s vessel if Dean remains human? This has always been my issue.

      1. I’m inclined to agree. It’s Dean’s unadulterated humanity that defines the character. But at the same time I feel as if he will never fully understand just why it was so wrong of him to go along with allowing Sam to be possessed against his will unless he went through it himself. At the end of the day I’d rather Dean keep his purity intact though because having him become possessed would drastically alter the tone of the show. So I agree with Jensen as well.
In Dean’s defense he didn’t have any other choice. He acted on impulse and his gut feeling is what he usually goes by. He worries after the event and not really before it. I can see why he did it, I always have. But looking back he feels now it was the wrong move when he admitted it in the store room. If we were Dean we would have done the same thing if we were pressured into it. He knew Sam was dying, and didn’t want to be alone. Okay that was selfish. But Gadreel also took Dean into Sam’s mind and new he wanted to die, so a lot weighed on Dean’s conscience. What else could he have done when the doctor could do no more for Sam other than let him die. Dean saw RED and acted on it. Sam will have his say, and I feel for both of them and we all know what’s coming when the truth is finally revealed to Sam.

        1. Oh I understand why Dean did it as well. He had just gotten back on the same page with Sam in the finale only to see him collapse right in front of him and lapse into a coma. There was probably a lot more that he wished was said between them, so for Sam to die on him at that point would have been really heartbreaking. Plus, when look at it from Dean’s perspective, no matter how old Sam gets he’ll always see him as the kid he’s supposed to protect. It’s ingrained in who Dean is to take care of Sam, and without him he doesn’t even know who he is.
I agree. I do try and see it from both sides if I can. It was a difficult choice for Dean to make, even though we all no in our hearts it was probably the wrong choice. But at the time that was the only option he had open to him and he took it, no questions asked. Except shoving Zeke into a ring of fire back then of course. We knew instantly that Dean didn’t trust him back then, and rightly so. But that all added to the drama of the scene. That’s who Dean is he will always remain faithful to Sam, no matter what he’s done. That’s what I do admire about Dean, he’s loyal to the bitter end.

But I just feel really bad for Sam in this scenario because he’s been possessed twice before and it’s a huge violation of his free will and autonomy. Then to find out that his brother was behind his possession by Gadreel, that’s going to really hurt him badly I think. He trusts Dean so implicitly, you know? It’s just sad. Not to mention the fact that he begged Death to make it final because he didn’t want anyone else getting hurt because of him, and this includes Dean. The first time he was brought back from the dead, Dean went to hell where he broke the first seal, eventually leading to the apocalypse where so many people died. The second time he was brought back by Castiel, who brought him back soulless, and we all saw the horrible things Soulless Sam did and how many people died as a result of that. Now he’s been brought back again and poor Kevin paid the price because of it and who else knows how many more will before Gadreel is ejected. This was all done without Sam’s consent. He has all of these deaths on his conscience and none of them are really his fault but he blames himself anyway. This is something that Dean will never truly understand.
So do I my heart wants to cuddle Sam and say its gonna be okay Sam!! As soon as I realized possession was on the cards, I thought OMG how is this all really going to end up. In one complete mess. But again Dean didn’t want Sam to die even though Sam clearly didn’t want to live any longer than he had to, and his mind was in a terrible state, and he couldn’t have really made that choice because he wasn’t of sound mind. I get instantly what his reaction will be when he really does find out, and I think it will take him a long time to get over this invasion of privacy. And what its done to him mentally, and what scares it will leave behind. But if Sam understands and he looks at it from both sides he maybe able to come to terms with it a whole lot easier. I want the writers to be mature about this, which has always been my wish. Yes, he will be as mad as hell, but when his anger has subsided he will I hope see that Dean did what he did out of LOVE exactly how Gadreel saw it. Sam is the one who’s been on the biggest and cruelest journey of them all. No one will know what he’s been through and how his mind coped with all that trauma, but him. This is why half the time the boys get into a pickle because they don’t get stuff of their chests and let it out. They carry crap around that they shouldn’t have to, just like Jo Harville said. They always say a problem shared is a problem halved.

So while I can see it from both boys’ perspectives, I just really feel more for Sam in this situation. Dean would have lost Sam, but once again Sam has lost control over his very being and Dean was the one behind it happening to him. It’s just really sad no matter which way you look at it.
I always have felt for Sam in such big ways. This year Dean’s head is on the chopping block, and he will have to face those consequences when Sam is Sam again. He will have his time to shine and kick Dean in the but and Dean knows deep down that is coming and he knows he’s not getting away with this lightly. They never learn keeping secrets from one another always ends up in a bad place, and he’s the one that will have to deal with it and take it on the chin. Sam’s anger will come to the surface again without doubt, and am certain the boys will be apart for a while again. But the dust will settle and we will see in time how it comes to pass. But yes I have to say my heart does go out to Sam and how he will come to terms with it all.

          1. “This was all done without Sam’s consent”
He consented to go along with Dean’s plan. He didn’t say Dean no let me die so Dean did the only thing he could. there was consent-not 100% informed but it was there. IMHO

It was there but to me it felt dishonest. It wasn’t above board. If Sam knew the real reason up front he wouldn’t as Dean said gone along with it. Dean admitted he tricked him.

            1. He consented to who he thought was Dean, but it was really Gadreel using Dean’s image. If Gadreel approached him in his own form he would have chosen to go with Death, Dean even acknowledged this himself. So Dean knew it was wrong but allowed Gadreel to do it anyway because he was so desperate to keep Sam alive. That’s not informed consent. That’s Dean conspiring with an angel to get his brother’s consent by deception. Sam agreed to Dean’s plan, whatever that may have been but never in a million years would he suspect his brother would allow an angel to use his image in order to trick him into being possessed. So that is what is going to hurt Sam most, IMO. That his brother willingly let an angel violate him without his consent after he’s been possessed twice before and then that angel ended up killing Kevin while wearing his face. That’s bound to mess a guy up quite a bit, especially when you take into consideration that Kevin had more or less become his adoptive younger brother. Dean is surely going to beat himself up over this more than anyone ever could but Sam is entitled to his own feelings of anger and betrayal at Dean over all of this.

That’s Dean conspiring with an angel to get his brother’s consent by deception.
Exactly ^^^^^^^ He was doing it behind his back. In a roundabout way.

              1. “Sam is entitled to his own feelings of anger and betrayal at Dean over all of this”

He certainly is. However I don’t think Dean betrayed him-he saved him. At the time he thought the angel would be in Sam, heal him, and leave. As usual things went badly. I still feel there was consent (yes he was talking to zeke as dean but zeke was saying waht dean would say) Sam said yes period. He should have asked whats your plan Im not saying yes till I know-but he didnt cause he WANTED to be saved. Dean definitely did something shady but it was with good intentions, with no intent to harm Sam. Dean deserves to be yelled at but if Sam has matured he should realize Dean did what he did because he had no other options.

So Sue-do you think that Dean should have let Sam die? Cause that was the only other option.

However I don’t think Dean betrayed him-he saved him.
I do think this too, Dean only wanted to SAVE Sam’s life, even though he went about it the wrong way. Dean would NEVER let SAM die. It was John’s wish if you can’t save him kill him. So Dean said he will save him every time.

                1. *Before I answer this question I’m going to preface this by saying that while I get that without Sam there is no show, I’m going to forget about that for the time being and answer honestly.*

As much as it pains me to say it, yes. Dean should have respected his brother’s wish to die. He would have been reunited with all of his loved ones in heaven and no one else would have gotten hurt and/or killed. Would it have been heartbreaking for Dean – sure it would have. It would have been heartbreaking for all of us. My own headcanon tells me that Dean wouldn’t have been very far behind him anyway because he probably would have gone on some kind of suicide run and gotten himself killed.

But the point is that Sam was ready to move on, Death had given him the validation that he had done enough good in his short life. He made the choice to go and for a guy like Sam, having a choice over his own free agency is a big deal. He’s lacked that since he was six months old. The lack of control over his whole life has been a running theme throughout this series, so for Dean to subvert his dying wish like that is a huge betrayal.

We can go back and forth about the semantics of that betrayal being what saved him but it’s still a betrayal. He was putting his trust in Dean, not some angel. And once again, Dean chose an angel over his brother thinking he knew what was best for Sam. Free will is another running theme throughout this series and Sam’s was completely taken away from him. Dean himself fought tooth and nail against being possessed by Michael for that very reason. And I don’t see Sam choosing to go along with who he thought was Dean as him wanting to be saved so much as it was him not wanting Dean to be all alone. Him asking “What do I do?” after “Dean” told him “There ain’t no me if there ain’t no you.” is a pretty big indicator of that. He hesitated before saying yes. And while I agree that Dean did what he thought was best and had nothing but good intentions, it still doesn’t invalidate the fact that he deceived his brother.

As far as Sam being mature enough to just drop the subject and act like everything is hunkey dorey is concerned, let me ask you this – would you ask a rape victim to do the same? Because for all intents and purposes this is what has once again happened to Sam. Being possessed is a violation, period. His mind and body are not his own and he has absolutely no control over what this angel is doing with him. Worse than that, his own brother is the one who allowed that to happen. He did it to save him but it’s still a major violation that Sam himself never would have agreed to. So if he acts a bit “immature” over it I think he’s earned that right.

  2. We don’t actually really know if Crowley is a 100% evil after what happened to him at the end of season 8 maybe I don’t know he has a little less evil and maybe more human now.
Hi Josh, welcome to the group great to see a new name. 😉
That is actually very true, we don’t know if Crowley is 100% evil. But then something might have gone wrong. He also injected himself with Kevin’s blood from that syringe so who knows how far gone Crowley really is. I had wondered at first if Crowley had traces of Sam in him since he was injecting his own blood into him when they were together in the chapel. He often relates to Moose and mocks him lovingly occasionally, so perhaps something has altered Crowley more than we first thought.

    Thank you, see you soon.

  3. I also wanted to say I hope Dean doesn’t get possessed by ANYBODY. I like my boys human. Thats one of my problems with this season-where is Sam?
Many are reading so much into this that Abaddon ever since episode 2 and their interaction that it sparked fans imaginations. Whether it was a sexy feeling couldn’t tell you. I think Dean needs to be the one to remain human with both feet on the ground, that’s who he is. But on the other hand it would be interesting to see Jensen spreed his wings and see him do something very different. We know he would rock, but would be wonderful to briefly watch. Sam is out of the building which is sad as we’ve not seen the real Sammy. Many too are complaining about this fact.

  4. What does going dark mean? I think it means different things to different people. I dont think, for example, working with Crowley, is going dark. They’ve done it before and they will do ti again if they have to. At this point I think they are almost allies as they both want Abbadon out.
To me it means one of two things I think. 1st being very depressed and in a dark place over his recent actions regarding Sam and other issues in general. Or he could go dark side Ala Sam with his demon blood addiction. In Dean’s case could be possessed by something supernatural. I would prefer personally Dean going depressed as I would love to see Jensen do his magic as regards his acting.

    1. *sigh* I’m not even…(lol)!

You know the writers are going to tease us and just have Dean walk into a dark alley or a house (he goes to a dark place, literally) and here we are getting all excited about him doing something dark. 😀

Hes in a dark place when hes sitting in the Impala cuz hey! its black.

I agree I don’t think hanging out with Crowley counts as going dark. I had the impression they meant on an emotional level. We’ve seen it before but I wouldn’t mind briefly revisiting that Dean if there was some good follow through on it.

And yeah Dean does need to remain human because hes the one we identify with on the show as a kind of everyman. Even though I think Dean being possessed by Abaddon would be hella scary. Shes scary enough now. I cant imagine how terrifying shed be with Deans ruthless smarts added to her.
