What will it mean for Dean to loose his humanity?

On this show Death has happened to our heroes a few times now, and we’ve come to expect that our main heroes at some point come back to life. Its a done deal! In the past Sam has come back to life, and Azazel threatened Dean did your brother come back 100% Sam. Had death some how changed his personality and that Sam wasn’t the same person who was resurrected back in season 2. This season has reflected seasons 2 and 4 in almost perfect symmetry having seen Sam die and the coin once again flipped on its head, and it was Dean’s turn to take that fatal blow. We sensed that Dean was the victim and he sadly took death like the hero he is gallant until his last dying breath, I’m proud of us really struck home. It made me think about humanity a lot this season and last. And I begin to think there is a strong connection.

But I think Dean is almost the opposite to Crowley. Crowley almost became human because of the trials and has human traits about him now. Dean has lost those human traits and has become like Crowley was, demonic. When we think about our own humanity, deeply. What do we think we would have lost if we were in Dean’s shoes. Crowley isn’t totally human now and his demonic powers haven’t diminished what so ever. So will Dean still have his Deanisum’s.  What will he miss, but just as important, what will he have gained? Dean virtually took his own life as he didn’t want to be this monster he was turning into. So death was his way out. He was loosing his self respect, his well being and his free will! Certain mannerisms made Dean, Dean. We all have our own feelings as to how we see Dean Winchester. So coming back from the dead how will it change him. What will now empower him to take on the world like this horrible killing machine he’s become. Life as Dean knows it for now, is empty, hollow and grim. Will he recognize himself? Will he acknowledge the fact that he is different and mirror what Sam used to be?

If Dean does come back from this, will it have affected him? Will he remember his time as a Demon, like he remembered his time in hell? Will those demonic forces have wrecked his insides that there might be some reminisce inside him that he won’t ever be the original Dean he once was. I did wonder how twisted Dean’s soul will be that demons enter a body, this time for Dean it was different the blade had performed the transformation. I still have a few niggling doubts as to how Dean did fully become a demon through the blade when it does take years to twist a soul in hell. What is Dean actually now in demon ranks, how high up is he, and how far down the road is he?

So how do you feel about Dean loosing his humanity? Will it change him for ever that he will be so corrupted we won’t no him at all. That the last trace of Dean will be gone forever! Loosing part of his character that made him human will be a transformation not all are looking forward to seeing, that a supernatural Dean who has been influenced by great power will rule Dean. Can Dean break through and regain his own humanity back, or is that way off the scale now? Is Sam Dean’s only hope of gaining back his humanity. Is this darkness for life, that the blade has taken every last ounce of Dean who will never see the light again. It is powerful stuff that has taken the stuffing out of us, but there is always that glimmer of hope that goodness will overcome that darkness within him and all will be hunky dory again. How do you think Dean will cope. And adapted to his new found powers?

  1. A good portion of next season (the first half) will deals with demon Dean and trying to cure him, full of Sam and Castiel fighting for Dean’s humanity as Dean struggles with being his own worst nightmare. There are so many questions to ask and answer: Cain seemed to still have some part of his humanity despite being a demon – will Dean hang on to his? Will he enjoy pain and torture like demons normally do, or will he, like Cain, be aloof and withdrawn? And will Sam try to cure him just like he did with Crowley? But we do remember that Cain himself was saved from the mark of Cain by the love of Colette. Foreshadowing? One can hope.
Feliks Welcome to the group, lovely to see a new poster. A lot of us have thought the same too. That we think Dean will really struggle with this. But I think this is what makes the story a story. I think we need a bit of light and dark as if it were all light it would be boring. I think Dean will be very much like Cain as he’s taken his mark with him, so maybe some of Cain’s personality rubbed off on him too when he transferred the mark. If Sam tries to cure Dean a la Crowley, don’t forget Sam will die too just as it was predicted. So the boys will be back to square one with this deal business. Dean will end up trying to bring Sam back yet again. I have been hoping for so long that Sam will save Dean for this reason, that it was Colette’s love that pulled Cain through this evil, so Sam is Dean’s rock so it feels right some how that he’s the one to pull him back from the brink. Some are saying Cas, but I think Sam needs this so badly to prove to Dean that he’s not failed him.

I hope its only a few episodes-it kills me to see Dean a demon!

      1. It usually takes 1/2 a season for the first journey and then the focus shifts to the other brother. For example s9- focus on Sam and Gadreel/Ezekiel then focus on Deans transformation. THis is the SPN pattern so I suspect it might continue. If the writers handle Demon Dean with sufficient gravitas and intertwine the bromance it can work. Sam knows how to cure a demon but at what cost to him and so the pattern continues. Of course, the writers often throw us some curves and we like them usually. Not sure we will see light moments for a while but then again, demons have been known to have a humorously, devilish side. It is so much more developed as a character study than the first few years. It really is a new show….again. Filming starts again in about a week and I think Robbie Thompson might have the first script, not sure- he does some quirky scripts. I so hope it is Carver who does the premiere.

          1. Yes. He has been assigned episode 3 to direct.
Yes, I’ll third that, just read it on the message board. I think he’s going back during the next couple of weeks to prep as they do his episode first. I really am hotting up to this story now.

  2. I think Deans turning into a demon wont be so bad for him. Because! no one really noticed (not SERIOUSLY) Deans sufferance, self-loathing and deep depression till now, or did anything about it. Now they will. Because they have to! or they’ll loose him… Till now, during the whole show, Deans problems were second to Sams problems, the worlds problems and so on and on. So Deans problems (the drinking, the suicidal tendencies, ex.) were left aside, to grow and deepen. I think that his demon days will make others realize how much they need him, value him and care about him. In particular, how little they did for him in the past (I feel Sam did little for Dean, especially in the last couple seasons). And consequently Dean will see through Sams struggles to get him back, how much he is loved. Unconditionally (not a Katy Perry reference! :-P). I have started to believe that only unconditional love (probably Sams) will save Deans humanity, as was Cains with Colette (that’s a First born ep. reference!). Cain himself states this. And there is a clear parallel between Cain and Dean. They are kindred spirits. Cain didn’t value himself as much as his brother soul and became the father of murder, a killer, a demon, a cursed soul until he found someone who did (value him), Colette. And his recognition happened consciously. So I think Deans self recognition will happen consciously while he is still a demon. Crowley in sacrifice said during the cure that everyone wants just to be loved! Ergo, that’s what demons miss, to feel loved. And that is what Dean has missed and, imo, at last turned him. He hasn’t felt loved, really really deeply and honestly since his mom died. John gave his life for him, but has DALDOM ep. shows, Dean never cleared the issues he had with his father, and lately, he hasn’t really cleared his issues with Sam neither. While he’ll be a demon, he is gonna free it all. He is going to take it all out. Everything he never showed or said. So Sam will know, comprehend (finally) and understand what he did wrong. I think that being a demon will be good for Dean at the very end. He will free his sorrow. And he badly needs it!
Great post Stella and beautifully phrased. I agree with most of it. I also remember Debbab touching on Crowley’s love his speech in Sacrifice how it all moved us, and that demons miss that that they too feel that urge and crave to be loved. I hope with all this turning Dean into a demon that the writers do it properly and allow us to see raw Dean. I no some of you think Sam has been horrible to Dean, but deep, deep down there is no shadow of a doubt that Sam does love him. I think there is a reason for this which will play out into season 10. I think they both still have issues with each other that have never been fully resolved and they need too. I think it will also help Sam and allow him to do some soul searching and it will help him in what he clearly needs to do. If Sam doesn’t save Dean this time I think I will curl up and die. Sam needs this for his own sanity. I also have liked the way the writers did bring DALDOM into this story line and that they had done their home work.

I thought so much more on this topic but, I can’t remember anything more now 😛 😉
Stirling effort, add it later if you remember!

I just hope that demon Dean will kick Crowley’s ass!
Me too, Crowley has lead Dean right up the garden path and into the slaughter house. He knew and I still think the bastard is lying through his teeth. Demons are known to lie, its in their nature. Its who they are. Unless again as I thought earlier it might be his humanity talking.

      1. All you need is love. Cain and Colette. When Dean felt that Sam had stopped being his brother, he nothing left to lose and readily excepted the MoC. He still wanted to protect Sam. He knocked him out and went it alone against Metatron. He knew the odds of surviving were slim. He also tells Sam to get out before Metatron returns. He also says it is better that he die because he was aware of turning into something he didn’t want to be-just a killer. So Dean has that love for Sam-now if it lasts thru his demonhood is the question. Redemption of a scarred soul. Gotta run- going to howl at the moon.

  3. When Dean first got the MoC, I submitted an article that showed concern for Dean’s humanity. Might be worth a re-read. However, your point is probably one that the writers are playing with this week as they meet to plan out season 10. Even Meg showed signs of humanity in season 8, and she was a demon a lot longer than our boy, Dean, Her feelings for Cas, not matter how base, seem to redeem her a bit. No doubt love has a lot to do with redemption. Brotherly love. And Sam does know how to cure a demon. Crowley has shown signs of being human and says he has kicked the habit, but who knows. He is fond of Dean. As Sam says Dean and Crowley have been “bromancing” this season. Certainly having Dean on his side removes the possibility that Dean might want to kill him or does it? Defused a Winchester did he? In the cafe, Dean references the problem of Hell being Crowley and how he wants off the hamster wheel. Now he has a buddy with whom he can howl at the moon. there is more to Crowley as we shall see in season 10.

  4. Episode 9×23 was the best rendering of the damnation of a soul I have seen in literature. Dante and Faust keep enough of the person being consumed that the person was recognizeable.

Not with Dean, all we love of the person from conception to the twisting of the angel blade in his gut is burned out like charred sheets of newspaper burned into thin sheets of black tissue to be scattered on a puff of air.

Never has Sammy grieved such sorrow. The blooded ripped body Sam clung too, cooling in his tight clasp, was less than an empty doll. Nothing remained of Dean as if the flesh was always empty and we all loved a mirage. Sam laid out a tangle of filithy rags on Dean’s bed, mingled in meat ready to rot.

That was what was reaminated so Crowley could go howl at the moon.

  5. “So how do you feel about Dean loosing his humanity? ”
It saddens me. He has always been the human of every story. Being a demon is his worst nightmare. I am so sad for Dean. I know its a great story line, but ti still breaks my heart.

I understand its sad Barb, but the show is now nine years old. They have to take risks and I think this risk might pay off. Dean will be back, most of us are 99% sure about this that the writers won’t leave him a demon for ever. There are ways to bring him back now. Trust Sam and Cas!

    1. I’m with Barb. It makes me sad. I can’t envision Dean totally loosing his humanity with Sam around, tho. So, will Crowley try to arrange for Sam to be killed to free up Dean to be thoroughly demon? Or will his connection to Sam because of the 3rd trial make that impossible for him? It would be ironic if it was Crowley who ends up saving Dean, wouldn’t it?
You know what, I wouldn’t put it past Crowley to have Sam killed off. I think he all along wanted a play mate, and Dean was always it. So Sam in his mind will be an irritant as he will spoil his plan. So I bet Sam will have his hands full. I hope he tries to beat Crowley at his own game. If Sam goes the trial route in curing Dean, I am pretty sure he knows he himself will die. Unless of course Naomi was lying. I don’t think he would risk that sacrifice. But with Cas’s help who knows what plan they will work through. Its not all doom and gloom. I think its rather exciting to see where they take the show and Dean.
