Why is Cole coming back?

We had spoiler news today that Cole is making a return visit, but why? I’ve been thinking about this all day and also reminding myself of that end scene in ‘Girls, Girls, Girls’. Cole still looked distraught, and at the time I did ponder on the thought, is this the last we will see of him? All those hours of training himself up to kill Dean for the death of his father still hadn’t really left him. He’s gone back home stewed for a while thinking about Dean’s words.

Is revenge for the death of his father still on his conscience? Has he forgiven Dean for the brutal death of his father. On the message board we did discuss the possibility that Cole could be the same monster as his father? Which could be an interesting twist. I also thought he might come back as a hunter, now he knows about Dean’s world, and that monsters are real? Had Dean’s suicide magic words not worked? If they had worked, why now has Cole decided to make a return visit? Is he not happy with Dean’s reaction to his fathers death? Does Cole want more answers that he’s not found yet? Dean was very vague about the events post 2003, and didn’t even recall what the monster was that he killed. So if Cole is what his father is, how will the boys know how to see it off?

So why have the writers decided to bring Cole back? For what satisfactory end, that Dean may end up killing Cole? Or might the writers decide to turn Cole into an ally and work along side The Winchesters as Garth did? Why do you think Cole is returning? What suspicions do you have? Wasn’t Dean’s words in talking Cole of the ledge enough to satisfy his curious mind?  I had thought, could Dean and Cole be possibly connected in some way, as they appear alike in looks, and how they act. Their temperaments are very similar, both being very driven men, and family orientated men. So could there be another Winchester family connection going on?

Drop me a line as to why you think Cole is making a sudden return? …..

  1. I rather like the idea that Cole comes back, not because he’s specifically looking for the Winchester, but because the Winchesters encounter him while hunting something else and they find that Cole has decided to hunt demons and monsters. I would not be averse to the idea of Cole receiving the MoC from Dean or from Cain himself. That would be a neat way to tie up both story lines. I don’t have a problem with Cole becoming a hunter with a family. John had a family and he hunted. Being a hunter doesn’t preclude one from family matters. It makes things dangerous for your family but not any more or less dangerous, I would think, than not knowing anything at all about monsters. After all, Cole knew nothing about monsters and still lost his father.
I agree with all your counts Ikeke! I could see the boys train him up, and maybe be even work along side them. This wouldn’t in the least bother me. Kevin and Garth both did these roles and it didn’t mess up the Winchester business. I think being a similar age, they all have a lot in common with one another now. It would be a shame to kill Cole off.

Also Cole becoming a hunter or a monster would be a nice setup for any new shows they want to spin-off from this one. Incidentally, my dream spin-off show would involve the ladies from Hibbing 911 and Cole, hunting monsters together.
I would jump up and down if Andrew Dabb decided on this for the spin-off. I think Travis is a good actor and could hold his own show. He is seasoned and knows what its like to be a hunter, one who’s lost someone close to the supernatural. I am not over keen on Donna, though after reading an article from her on the Fangasm website recently I am warming up to her slightly. I thought Jody on her own could do equally as well with Cole as the person she turns to if she has a case. It could be a perfect chemistry pairing who’s to know!!

  2. Looking at the pictures of Jensen Ackles and the actor that plays Cole, I think there will be a Campbell family connection. Cole looks a lot like Dean and has the same bad assery personality as Dean. If course, sense he was not raised as a hunter Dean or Deamon had a tactical advantage during that last fight. Since this season seems to be shaping up around family, I would not be surprised if Cole is distantly related or somehow connected to the Winchesters. If Cole is a monster or fears that he or his kids are in danger of becoming monsters, then why go to hunters that are going to kill him? He saw Dean kill his dad so I doubt he would turn to him for assistance. Since he is also married with kids, I don’t see Cole becoming a hunter unless they are lost to tragedy. So that leaves Cole re-grouping to make another attack on Dean. I don’t trust that Cole is content with Dean’s explanation.
That is very true as well! Maybe the symptoms have upset him, and he’s so far down the line that he is so desperate and just wants out, and to die. He knows how humane Dean is, and that he would give him a fitting end and bury him as a hunter. But I think I would’t like this story line on principle. Maybe its just this simple. Perhaps when Cole returns, a monster has killed all his family. It happened to Jody and Bobby and others I’ve since forgotten, this would be perfect revenge and story telling. Maybe Cole just wants more answers from Dean because he wasn’t happy before. As we’ve said. But is this enough information to build a story upon? They’ve done it once, so why repeat?

    1. You have a good point about Cole fearing Sam and Dean if he feared or was becoming a monster. So probably not.

I don’t see a resemblance between Cole and Dean, but maybe between Cole and Christian. Still, I had the impression that all of the Campbell’s were involved in hunting so why wouldn’t he have known or a Campbell hunter have taken his father out? It would be way to coincidental for him to turn out to be an long lost relative.

Considering his vengeance quest against Dean with no regard for his family, I think him hunting is plausible. He’s a lot like John in that respect. I can certainly see that coming into play so that Dean and Sam will have to confront their own issues with their dad. As far as plot line, it may be as simple as Cole stumbling upon a hunt and asking the boys for help.

  3. I think it’s possible that whatever kind of monster his father was may begin to effect Cole or he fears it will, and he goes to the boys for help.
This is a good thought … me likes!! Does Cole think he might be that monster too. And this realization might have hit him, now he’s found out the truth. Does he want Dean to end him….

  4. Cole puts me in mind of a driven John Winchester, although is s mere weak image of John. Cole is driven, too much rage to act out his full potential. If Cole stood no chance against DemonDean or Dean trying to talk Cole down, then against Mark-of-Cain Dean he is nothing but cannon fodder. Cole is an interesting character and solid actor. I don’t have any idea what the writers have in mind for our loose cannon. Cole would make a good free range squire offering support. The brothers are in need of a supporting armed ally serving as a rear guard and reinforcements.
Me too! I liked Cole almost instantly, and I have really got attached to the guy in a good way. I want the writers to make good use of him, and not kill off just for drama. Jody, Garth and Charlie have all worked out and too did poor Kevin. So why can’t COLE? He would be so useful for the boys, and they could teach him so much and help him out of a much needed crises. They could really bond.

Our knight errands have lost their knightly class men-at-arms, rather like NCO support for officers in the Western armies. Since the Roadhouse was burned and personnel killed neither brother has had a brother-in-armed to comfort, understand them and give them someone to talk shop to. (Garth is a none buddy but is not in the military fraternity, and is a armed civilian) This fraternal bond of honor, duty, sacrifice is a must. This is chivalry, a heritage Sam and Dean inherited from Marine John warrior of Vietnam, heir to all US military actions. Dean has always been outside looking in on John’s military service. A male as always gone through the right of passage of bearing formal arms and being blooded. Do our writers understand this? A writers made the comment SUPERNATURAL was riding the road show and the Roadhouse tied them down. Do they not recognize the natural of chivalry errant knights who battles dragons, saves damsels, and ride their black charger into battle? Mythical knights battle mythical monsters. If it is of any comfort, noble Grail knights go stark raving mad running about like beasts. Dean is keeping company with Sir Lancelot who was purged after being driven mad by guilt and returning to sanity purged and purer.
Sometimes it makes me wonder if they do dig deep enough. Eric Kripke was wonderful in digging stuff up about the mythology and had some really strong back stories. But I don’t think these writers really go back that far, or even touch this surface. John was such a pivotal character is the boys up bringing, that he played a huge part in how they were raised and acted in certain circumstances. I wish John could have been in the show longer, and got to know if not later on more about him in back stories. I think they let his character down in a number of ways. How fans have portrayed him in not such a good light.
