XI: Winchester Brothers Report “We geteth it.”

“Hell’s Angel” (11.18) is an ambitious episode. The big players are back on the scene and making big moves. Old alliances are renewed, a character returns from the dead and Lucifer unleashes the power of a Hand of God on Amara. Last episode before the two-week April hiatus.

crowley exorcized by mooseleys

Sam, Dean and Crowley on a mission to trap Lucifer: “He has to be dealt with.”

In exchange for tearing up a soul contract, Crowley gets the Horn of Joshua, a Hand of God, from an old client. Bent on revenge and eager to neutralize the Devil, he meets with the brothers in Saint Louis. The Winchesters find his litany of grievances against the archangel who treated him like a dog amusing, but they are not on board with his plan. Crowley wants Lucifer back in the Cage, immediately. Sam and Dean want Lucifer to defeat Amara first. What they disagree on, is which vessel he should be inhabiting when he goes up against The Darkness. For Sam, Castiel is strong enough to hold Lucifer and his choice to let him in should be respected. For Dean, Castiel should be saved and Lucifer directed to another vessel.

Rowena and Amara on a mission to end Lucifer: “I can be useful.”

Rowena has been helping Amara get her strength back after the collective smiting she endured in “O Brother, Where Art Thou”. Amara is suspicious of Rowena’s motives, especially when she finds out she’s “Uncle Crowley”’s mother. Rowena explains they have a common enemy in Lucifer, who would have killed had she not been protected by magic. She also wants to be of use to Amara, help her by spying on the Winchesters and Lucifer, and maybe, even be her friend.

Lucifer and the angels in Heaven: “You need me.”

Lucifer tells the angels that they need his help to defeat Amara. They don’t trust him. He just vaporized one of their own and he has a reputation. Lucifer breaks down their arguments. God casting him out? Only because he refused to bow down to the failed experiment that is mankind. God labeling him evil? A marketing strategy to create a super-vilain in order for justify the need for a savior.

Amara sends out a warning to Heaven : “I’m back.”

Rowena’s treatments are working and Amara’s ready to try a little test. Her power hit the sky like thunder and swirls through Heaven like a cyclone, knocking even Lucifer off his feet.

Rowena rejoins her old team: “Back from the dead, Fergus!”

Rowena is terrified by the magnitude of Amara’s power and worried about The Darkness plans for mass destruction. She lies to Amara, telling her the Winchesters are too paralyzed with fear to be a threat and then flees. She joins her old team just as the brothers wonder how the plan’s going to work without the only person who can read the Book of the Damned.

Sam, Dean, Crowley and Rowena against Lucifer: “Lucifer’s hold on him is too strong.”

The team summons Lucifer. They pin him down and try to speak to Castiel. Dean asks him to expel Lucifer but the archangel quickly recovers and informs him that Castiel is happy with his “arrangement”. When Crowley sees the warding’s about to fail, he makes a split decision to possess Castiel. He finds him, watching TV in the bunker’s kitchen in his mind, apathetic and unwilling to move. Castiel doesn’t intervene when Lucifer (in his Nick form) attacks Crowley, and Crowley sends an SOS through his vessel’s skin. Sam responds by exorcising Crowley and Dean lends a hand by splashing holy water onto the vessel in order to speed up the process.

Amara versus Lucifer: “I think you and I need to have a nice, long chat.”

Rowena  warns the team that the holy fire has gone out. Crowley exits stage left, leaving Lucifer free to seize the Horn and the Winchesters. The Darkness enters the scene as Lucifer is torturing Sam and Dean.  Even with the power of the Horn, Lucifer barely manages to ruffle Amara’s hair. She frees the brothers and drags Lucifer away.

Overall grade: 6/10

Watching Sam and Dean latinate, Crowley coming up with a new scheme, and the three of them teaming up against a common enemy is always fun. The parts I really liked were Rowena coming back from the dead, Amara showing off and Mark Pellegrino’s Lucifer returning.

We always hear of Crowley’s travels to faraway lands and it was fun to tag alongside him when he went to the An-Nafud Desert in Saudi Arabia. I chuckled at Dean’s “Palace? Oh, you mean the abandoned nuthouse” line. I had trouble staying awake during the angelic board meeting but I got a real kick out of Lucifer’s “Its not like he created the Prius, which actually works” line. I always found his hatred for humanity amusing and to be honest, quite justified. I was ecstatic to see my favorite witch rise from the dead and I hope she survives season 11. They can send her back to Scotland to build the Mega Coven if they want. I just really hope that they don’t kill her.

Aside from all this, the episode had some head scratching moments, like this canon continuity issue that’s stuck in my throat like a chicken bone.

Canon who? …Canon what.

Canon destruction has unfortunately become a common occurrence during Jeremy Carver’s reign as a showrunner. It was especially glaring at the beginning in season 8. This series is based on an older brother and a younger brother and a lot of the epic mythology that surrounds them falls into that first/second born rule. Dean is Cain because Cain is the older brother. Sam is Abel because Abel is the younger brother. Dean is Michael because Michael is God’s first born. It has always the case in the mythology of Supernatural until  “Hell’s Angel” went “Taxi Driver” on us.

Did we collectively hallucinate Michael telling Lucifer “You know, you haven’t changed a bit, little brother” in “Swan Song”? Hearing Amara refer to Lucifer as God’s first son made me nauseous. Yet another attempt to destroy an amazing character to prop up Lucifer. So not only is Michael curled up in the Cage touching himself while Lucifer is disco dancing to Tavares but now millennia of history have been mangled to knock him off his spot as the first born??? One step forward, two steps back. Mr. Carver, please look over some of your writers’ scripts when you find the time.

Still on this? “His choice deserves to be respected.”

sam respecting personal choices policy by sammyhale

Deep sigh for this one. “This is exactly how we screw ourselves. We make the heart choice, instead of the smart choice.” And this is how the writers screw their characters over. Didn’t we go through this merry-go-round already? Didn’t Sam disrespect Dean’s choice in season 10 and then said in season 11 he’d do it again, after he complained that Dean disrespected his choice in season 9? What is this “policy” no one uses? Does the tree make a sound if no one is in the forest to hear it? Is it too much to hope for, that Sam and Dean agreeing in “Hell’s Angel” to throw away that so-called policy that never was, the last I hear from this? Are they still fighting about a policy that only exist in abstract?

“It’s killing me.”

You and me both, Crowley!

“I would rather stick white hot skewers in my eyes then listen to you two bitches bicker.”

Ditto on the bitches bickering. Pass on the skewers but.. I definitely feel your pain there, Fergus. Let’s hear it for Crowley, who spoke the truth of my heart while this tedious fight was going on. Which made him telling Sam and Dean to can it because he was the only one with the weapon, one of my favorite moments.

Juicy bit: “God’s Chosen”

“The crux of your dispute is the contention that Lucifer, and only Lucifer can use the Horn to beat Amara.”

Crowley was right. It’s not about Lucifer using the Hand. In order for it to work, it might have to be used by God’s Chosen.

gods chosen by littlehobbit13

This is what I said about God and his chosen in the Report for “The Vessel”.

“watching Dean holding the depowered Hand of God, I couldn’t help but wonder if it meant anything for his future. The writers don’t seem to care anymore but to me he will forever be the Host of Heaven, the Servant of Heaven who staked the Fancy Lady of Babylon, and the one who killed Zachariah and looked into his grace without losing his eyes, back when it meant something in the show’s canon. What if God’s Weapon could be reactivated by his Chosen. Now wouldn’t that be a great storyline for Dean?”

Remember the last time an angel of the Lord failed while using a Weapon of God? Who succeeded? It was Dean, in  “99 Problems”. Will the writers remember that he’s the Host of Heaven, Michael’s vessel and thus God’s Chosen? I’ll be waiting with baited breath.

Final verdict

dean works the spell by justjensenanddean

What goes up must come down. “Red Meat” was an exceptional episode and I can’t use it as a point of reference for the rest of the season. “Masterpiece” loses all meaning if everything can be one.

I enjoyed Amara opening a can of whoop-ass on Lucifer, Rowena coming back from the dead, albeit, sadder and more subdued, and Crowley, who can’t help but being illuminated by the brilliance of his vessel, Mark The Sheppard.

As for the brothers, they’ve given me enough joy in recent episodes for me to give them a pass for whatever they were doing in “Hell’s Angel”.

Who isn’t getting a pass however, is whoever toppled down years of meaningful mythology by switching up Lucifer and Michael’s birth orders. Blasphemy. I’ll need the two-week hiatus to recover. Meanwhile I’ll be waiting for the moment Dean and Amara meet again. Someday.

Merci,

Vee

I agree. I always thought she wanted to consume/absorb/fuse with Dean. I believe however that her plan for the rest of humanity is different and could be what she started with Sidney.

      1. Amara’s priority is to get revenge on her brother by having him watch the destruction everything he created, this would include humanity of which Dean is a part. She then wants to destroy her brother. She has yet been able to absorb Dean in the process. Becoming one with Dean feels more creative than destructive because she does not understand the beauty of creation. Maybe he is her way to enlightenment. Amara defines this concept of bliss as an absorbing the other and she cannot bring herself to do that to Dean. He affects her as strongly as she affects him on an emotional level. Uniting equals giving yourself over to the other completely which she cannot do since she is so full of vengeful wrath. Are we to assume that she has been a villain from the git-go? Has her shabby treatment been formulated from sibling rivalry or was she created to be a destructive force. It just feels as though her back story is lacking details that make her a sympathetic villain. Her definition of bliss may not be Webster’s.

I was so annoyed by Sam position about Cas. Yes. It was Castiel’s choice but we all know that he was depress, having PTSD episodes and self-loathing issues so obviously his mind wasn’t at all in the right place when he took that decision. I know they don’t know that, but they also should (well I think Dean does) know their friend well enough to realize he didn’t do this after a healthy meditation moment. So yes, he needs to be saved. That’s what family and friends are for? Right? I mean if they don’t try to put you out from a terrible mistake, what’s the point?

Great point, Deb. I noticed, and I absolutely believe Amara is under Dean’s influence too (as much as a primordial force can be influenced by a mortal). This is what I said about it when I was discussing Deanmara with Alliwantiswriteaboutit in the “Love Hurts” Report.

We don’t think about the power Dean holds over Amara because he’s just a human and she’s basically God, but he does have power over her. As she was growing up she looked positively transfixed by him. As a young woman, she told him she was fascinated by him, and it showed. It doesn’t look like she has complete control over the way she feels about him. It’s like her desire to protect him is more than benevolence towards Dean or even affection. There’s a bond there and she just HAS to intervene when he’s hurt, in front of her. She’s got him under her skin too.

I’m thinking Amara’s bliss could be what we saw in “Thin Lizzie”, where she touched Sidney and removed all her pain. Sidney was in a constant state of bliss after that. She even compared Amara’s touch to “ecstasy-orgasm-chocolate”. The problem with Amara’s “renovation” is it leads to “destruction” because all this bliss made Sidney lose all her inhibitions, worries and conscience, which made her give into her worst instincts which unleashed the killer within.

  3. I loved this episode! Amara was amazing and terrifying at the same time. I don’t blame Rowena for deciding to cooperate with Crowley and the Winchesters against her. Amara’s little test gave me goosebumps, even if it didn’t hurt the Angels and only scared them.

I don’t know how the show does that, but I am impressed by how Lucifer is represented. The actors are perfect too. They manage to convey naturally his malice, his arrogance and his will to distort everything he touches for his own benefit. I liked so much the last scene between him and Amara. I am sorry for Castiel, but Lucifer was torturing Sam for one year and a half (earth’s time) and we still don’t know what is happening to Michael in the Cage.

I was pleased by Rowena’s return. With her back, it’s a good opportunity to use the Book of the Damned again. Even before his mother showed up, Crowley had already mentioned the Cage to Sam and Dean. Then, Dean said something about ”God’s chosen”. I agree with what is written in the review about Dean. When he decided to say ”yes”, he became the Host of Heaven. He is Michael’s true vessel and he is connected to Amara because of the Mark of Cain. We also know that Chuck is coming back and it is evident that Lucifer couldn’t beat the Darkness by himself, although he possessed the power of a Hand of God. I don’t think that all these are based on mere coincidence. By the end of the season, is there a possibility that the Cage would be reopened and Michael would be free, so that Dean would have to say ”yes”?

I didn’t give much attention to the argument between Sam and Dean, until you pointed out Sam’s quote about respect. You are right, Sam disrespected Dean’s choice in season 10, but this was Sam’s ”heart choice” that let the Darkness free. I think that the whole argument has to do with the fact that, according to Sam, the ”heart choices” come from their despair to save each other without thinking the consequences of their actions and, most of the time, without thinking what the other wants either. In my opinion, this is the reason that in the previous episode Dean lied to Sam about his suicide attempt.

Sam usually makes the ”smart choice” instead of Dean who always makes the ”heart choice”. This is the fundamental difference between those two. Both of them are brave and they are ready to sacrifice themselves to save others, but Sam always has a plan about how to do it, instead of Dean who is always impulsive. In ”Love Hurts”, when the monster came for the woman, the first thing, that Dean did, was to kiss the woman so that he would transfer the curse from her to himself. It is in his nature to follow his instinct first.

In addition, this isn’t the first time that this happens. In season 5, when Dean decided to say ”yes” to Michael, Sam and Castiel thought that Dean’s choice was a suicide mission. Sam did everything in his power to stop him and in the end he succeeded it. However, when Sam decided to say ”yes” to Lucifer, Castiel said that it was a good plan and Dean had to respect Sam’s choice for the greater good.

I am truly glad that, this time, both brothers decide to save Castiel.

I am also confused about what Amara said to Lucifer. Yes, in ”Swan Song” Michael said that he was the ”big brother” not Lucifer. In my opinion, all these family bonds are simply metaphors. The Angels were created by God. They weren’t born. Maybe what Amara meant with ”first born” was that Lucifer was created first, but Michael is the ”big brother” because he is the strongest among them.

Yes, it was nice to see Amara flex her muscles. I love her and I hope they’ll use her a lot more in the coming episodes. As it is right now, I hope her story continues in season 12. For a character that’s supposed to be a huge menace, she hasn’t had time to do much of anything and it would be unfortunate if she got killed in the finale. That’s just 5 episodes and I don’t even think she’ll be in all of them 😦

“I don’t know how the show does that, but I am impressed by how Lucifer is represented.”

I like the personality they gave him on the show. He was chilling as Nick’s wife (Bellamy Young), mesmerizing as Nick in season 5 (Mark Pellegrino) and king-like as Sam!Lucifer (Jared Padalecki). I didn’t like the personality they gave him as Hallucifer (Mark Pellegrino) in season 7 as much, but when he came back in the Cage in “O Brother”… whew!!! I was dazzled lol.

“I was pleased by Rowena’s return. With her back, it’s a good opportunity to use the Book of the Damned again.”

I wasn’t disappointed when she died, and it was a great surprise to see Ruth’s name in the opening credits of the episode.

“Then, Dean said something about ”God’s chosen”. I agree with what is written in the review about Dean.”

It would be fantastic if we could finally get Michael!Dean. Jensen will rock it, and Michael’s one of my favorite angels in SPN. Matt Cohen’s performance in “The Song Remains the Same” made me hungry for more. Been starving since.

“I didn’t give much attention to the argument between Sam and Dean, until you pointed out Sam’s quote about respect. You are right, Sam disrespected Dean’s choice in season 10, but this was Sam’s ”heart choice” that let the Darkness free.”

Exactly. Which is why he looks silly talking about upholding a policy he himself doesn’t really believe in. He has no leg to stand on here and I’m annoyed with the back-and-forth, and the fact that Sam can’t seem to make up his mind about this. He skewered Dean over Gadreel but the second Dean was the one in trouble, he was ready to burn the world to the ground and completely disregard Dean’s repeated pleas for him to stop. After that, he should have refrained from mentioning that non-policy again. Comes across kinda hypocritical.

“I think that the whole argument has to do with the fact that, according to Sam, the ”heart choices” come from their despair to save each other without thinking the consequences of their actions and, most of the time, without thinking what the other wants either. I agree and I get that, but what’s the point of bringing it up if they’ve proven they’re not going to change? Just own up to the fact that in the end the heart choice always wins out and move on.

“I am also confused about what Amara said to Lucifer. Yes, in ”Swan Song” Michael said that he was the ”big brother” not Lucifer. In my opinion, all these family bonds are simply metaphors. I have to disagree. All of the vessel mythology is based on the fact that Michael is the first born. Big brother isn’t used to describe strength levels but birth order. Why would Michael and Gabriel both refer to Lucifer as their little brother if he was born before them?

It’s stated plainly in “Changing Channels”.

“Michael, the big brother, loyal to an absent father, and Lucifer, the little brother, rebellious of Daddy’s plan. You were born to this, boys. It’s your destiny! It was always you! As it is in heaven, so it must be on earth.”

The writers made a mistake, like they did with the Gran Canyon. It happens but this one is massive considering the importance of birth order in the series mythos.

“(This is too long. I’m sorry!:) )”

Never apologize for that. I love reading reviews as much as I love writing them and I’m thankful you guys take the time to comment, whether it is with with 5 words or 5 paragraphs. Agree or disagree, we’re all here to talk about the show we love! Thank you, Maria 😉

      1. I would like to see more of Amara too. You are right, it would be unfortunate if she got killed. Also, I hope the season finale will end with a big twist. In my previous comments, I suggested hypotheses about the Empty and a sacrifice from Dean’s part, but the truth is that I don’t want to see either of the brothers die. Last season’s finale was refreshing.

As for Hallucifer in season 7, it wasn’t scary and I only liked it in ”Repo Man” at the library scene when Sam saw the people hitting hard their heads on the tables.

I know that the writers made a mistake and I agree that it is a big one. I just try to understand why they suddenly change the canon of the show. I remember Gabriel’s quote from ”Changing Channels” and I know that the ”big brother” describes the birth order. However, Sam and Dean are the true vessels of Lucifer and Michael respectively, not only because of their birth order but also because of their behavior. The latter, in my opinion, is more important than their age.

Now I come to think of it, I believe that the writers changed the canon of the show because they wanted the dialogue between Amara and Lucifer to fit into the story-line of the Mark of Cain. I know that this isn’t an excuse for their mistake, but it makes sense in connection with the fact that both Dean and Cain are first born sons and they were bearers of the Mark of Cain which Lucifer originally had.

  4. Your review is spot on to what I saw, felt, and thought so I will only comment and not review this episode. My rating is a 7/10 a bit higher than your rating, only because the scenes with Misha/Cas are stunning bits of acting. The “kitchen scene” during Crowley’s possession of Cas (reminding me of the Poughkipsee scene in s 9 and bringing my hopes up only to be dashed to the ground with its failure) is clever writing and gives both Marks and Misha time in the exercise yard. The knowledge of how much the Winchesters have learned from season 8 on is tied into their actions. The Winchesters are on the same page seemingly, especially with a well timed “if”. There is wit in some of the lines you mention in the review but Dean’s sex fantasy seems to me to be a gratuitous comment used to point out bad choices- enough with the stereotyping of Dean as the sex addict- fans already get it-My reaction is the same as Crowley’s. The direction is solid with a variety of shots and the special effects carry the day.
This writing team always gives me pause because they are rather free with the canon as you have clearly pointed out about the angel birth order. Not sure how I feel about Rowena’s resurgence but something is needed as a plot device to explain Amara’s absence and the spell work to contain Lucifer. Ruth Connell’s performance is a toned down Rowena so it is not as campy.
My first watch produced the thought of what a hot mess this episode is. On re-watch the episode has a better feel for me. It is an episode with much going on to set up the finale of the main arc of the season but, it leads the Winchesters to another dead end except for who is God’s chosen( Dean has been before but now Sam is purified and Cas has been saved by God before). It’s anybody’s game. Cas’ vessel is not looking to good at the end of the episode either.
Items to take away: What is with the rules the Winchesters make up? Yes, it is a new understanding between them since Dean made the choice for Sam about Gadreel and his own fate with the Mark of Cain. But Winchesters always ignore the rules,( one time Sam followed the rules and ended up with Amelia and that was a poor writing choice that did not prove successful for anyone). Dean’s loyalty and decision to go rescue Castiel and ignore the rule of choice(Cas’s decision) is pure Dean. Is he turning into a Bobby like father figure as he calls Cas and idiot?
Maybe the writers, Ross-Leming and Buckner, are in is the position of being assigned to write an episode that revives the main arc. There is much ground to cover in a short episode. It has the feeling of the first part of a multiple episode story and so to have a hiatus and then a Monster of the Week to follow feels hollow. After “Redmeat” this episode, although not a complete bomb, just lacks that cohesiveness. Even latinate and a large crucifix don’t work so why would the episode. It is still not the worst of the season for me as I think episode 3 holds that position firmly. Then again, thinking about Crowey’s comment on first impressions, I’ll wait until the end of this season to confirm this thought.

      1. Is the opening scene in Saudi Arabia in the present time? From the archeologist’s side burns it had an earlier feel to it. More Raiders of the Lost Arc. Crowley time traveling? Crowley has been writing those contracts for ions-long before he was Crowley. Thoughts?
With that movie in mind, I do like the Star Wars Luke/Vadar Lucifer?God visual.

The archeologist did look like he could have come from a different time. It’s always possible that Crowley went back in time although I’m not sure how it works when it comes to soul contracts. Soul deals are for 10 years. Meaning, the archeologist sold his soul in 2006. It could be that Crowley, now needing a weapon against Lucifer, visited clients of his (still alive) who could have come in contact with a Hand of God and offered them a deal. The Hand in exchange for their soul so they wouldn’t go to Hell when they died.

Going back in time would mean he would have to deal with clients whose souls were already in Hell and probably demonized in the normal timeline… In the words of Sam Winchester, “my head hurts” lol. Maybe I don’t see it because I don’t remember the plot of Raiders aside from this part lol

I noticed. I agree with your assessment. To me it also makes them look like a bunch of generic, one-dimensional characters I can no longer be bothered with. Zachariah, Uriel. Season 4 angels used to have some spunk. Never mind that assembly line of grey figures against a white backdrop we’ve been dealing with since season 8. I used to be surprised at Dean’s dislike of Heaven (the actual place). No longer.

    2. After rewatching I give it an 8.5-I really enjoyed it. Loved Crowley in it, glad they explained Amaras absence as still suffering from the smiting. I was glad to see Rowena but I would have liked a better explanation of how she survived/revived. Loved Crowley smoking into Casifer, loved Sam and Dean exorcising him to save him!

I also really liked episode before this one-great call out to the Revenant, and had me worried the whole episode

      1. I did enjoy “Red meat” and gave it a 9.5. Sorry if I left an impression from my comments that indicated otherwise. I think that is one of the reasons “Hell’s Angel” is lower. Despite its intensity, it is all over the place in some ways and the Winchesters talk a lot more than usual. Still good season so far.

          1. Interesting though the viewing audience was down for “Red Meat” and up back to normal for “Hell’ Angel”. Maybe it had something to do with March Madness and viewership? I so wish the network would better advertise this show as it does its other babies on other networks. Guess it is up to fandom to get viewership back up to glory days.

I honestly don’t think the CW fells any pressure to advertise SPN. It’s been their 3rd highest rated show after The Flash and Arrow for a long time, only moving to 4th position after Legends of Tomorrow premiered and the way LOT is going, SPN might regain its number 3 spot in the near future.
They take the SPN audience for granted and figure we’ll always be here no matter the time changes and minimal promo.

“Guess it is up to fandom to get viewership back up to glory days.”

I’d be shocked if it happened. What nmber do you have in mind when you say glory days? Broadcast TV ratings are going down every year and SPN’s evolution mostly follows the general trend. We used to have 0.9/1.0 demos a couple of years ago.
We’re down to 0.8 for the Fall and now 0.7 on average (ratings go down in Spring) and 0.6 on really bad days but Arrow’s also down. The Flash is an anomaly and the number 1 show on the network and all the other shows are behind us from iZombie to The 100, Vampire Diaries,Originals, Jane the Virgin, etc. 🙂

              1. This thought comes from a place where I just wished more people actually knew about the show. Out there beyond fandom, there are some tv watchers who just don’t know about the quality of this show or that it exists at all. Like a proud parent, I just want others to know what a quality scripted tv show should look like. The Syfi channel runs some imitative stories without the quality. The ratings were back up this past week. Again, I think college B ball had something to do with the lower ratings the week before. I always wondered why ARROW scored so high and then SPN fell off a bit. Then I realized the viewers might have a bedtime curfew. SPN is rather adult. Just wished our show received a bit more positive attention from the network and in the industry.

Loved Crowley and Amara too. Rowena survived because she was protected by a resurrection spell, which makes perfect sense for a witch who has the formula for immortality (she gave it to Oskar).

“Loved Crowley smoking into Casifer, loved Sam and Dean exorcising him to save him!”

Definitely a high point of the episode.

    3. “Your review is spot on to what I saw, felt, and thought so I will only comment and not review this episode.”

      Thank you, Deb 🙂

“My rating is a 7/10 a bit higher than your rating, only because the scenes with Misha/Cas are stunning bits of acting. The “kitchen scene” during Crowley’s possession of Cas (reminding me of the Poughkipsee scene in s 9 and bringing my hopes up only to be dashed to the ground with its failure) is clever writing and gives both Marks and Misha time in the exercise yard.”

I loved that scene, especially the fact that Crowley made a split decision to possess Castiel. He is part of the team in his own way (evil and devious as he may be) and while he exits stage left when things get hairy, he’s also been known to stick his neck on the line to get the job done.

“There is wit in some of the lines you mention in the review but Dean’s sex fantasy seems to me to be a gratuitous comment used to point out bad choices- enough with the stereotyping of Dean as the sex addict- fans already get it-”

I don’t believe Dean has ever been portrayed as a sex addict. He has a healthy appetite for sex, loves frisky women and there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s been a part of his personality since the pilot.

“This writing team always gives me pause because they are rather free with the canon as you have clearly pointed out about the angel birth order.”

I hear the duo BuckLeming is behind this, which is not surprising. Still, what is the supposed runner of the show doing? Then again, it’s a silly question coming from someone who believes he’s already shown his disregard for faithful characterization when he had Sam turn his back on Kevin and Dean in season 8 (no hunter, especially one as legendary as Sam would ever believe that someone disappearing in a cloud = oh yeah, he totally must be dead).

“Not sure how I feel about Rowena’s resurgence but something is needed as a plot device to explain Amara’s absence and the spell work to contain Lucifer. Ruth Connell’s performance is a toned down Rowena so it is not as campy.”

She was definitely less dramatic than usual. I think she’s still shaken by her brush with death.

“My first watch produced the thought of what a hot mess this episode is.”

Lol! Mine was what a lukewarm boring mess this is.

“On re-watch the episode has a better feel for me. It is an episode with much going on to set up the finale of the main arc of the season”

      I can definitely see that.

“but, it leads the Winchesters to another dead end except for who is God’s chosen”

They can’t win all the time. I was fine with the plan not working although this means I’m still going to have to listen to the “Let’s hunt.” “No we can’t, what about AmaraLuciCas?” “We got jack for now so let’s hunt” song at the beginning of every MOTW episode. Sorry, but I find it annoying to hear the characters apologize before embarking on hunts which happen to be their day job.

“Items to take away: What is with the rules the Winchesters make up? Yes, it is a new understanding between them since Dean made the choice for Sam about Gadreel and his own fate with the Mark of Cain. But Winchesters always ignore the rules,( one time Sam followed the rules and ended up with Amelia and that was a poor writing choice that did not prove successful for anyone).”

Exactly. Sam following the policy was an exception to the rule and what he, to this day, calls his greatest sin. Can we then stop talking about the policy that never was? There are deep wounds there lmao.

“Maybe the writers, Ross-Leming and Buckner, are in is the position of being assigned to write an episode that revives the main arc. There is much ground to cover in a short episode. It has the feeling of the first part of a multiple episode story and so to have a hiatus and then a Monster of the Week to follow feels hollow.”

SPN always has this SPN rhythm where it goes from MOTW to mytharc and back to MOTW. I understand it can be jarring from a storytelling perspective. As an MOTW lover, I don’t really mind because MOTW tend to focus on the Winchesters which are my primary interest. This season might be the first one where I was actually clamoring for a mytharc episode because I love the Deanmara storyline. Didn’t get any of it here so I’m more than ready to hit the road with a salt gun.

“After “Redmeat” this episode, although not a complete bomb, just lacks that cohesiveness. Even latinate and a large crucifix don’t work so why would the episode.”

But the latination and crucifix worked. They were only directed at Crowley, who’s a demon, and got him out. Sorry, I’m partial to the latination. It’s one of the few moments I enjoyed :D. I do agree it wasn’t the most cohesive episode.

“It is still not the worst of the season for me as I think episode 3 holds that position firmly.”

Agree with that too. “The Bad Seed” remains my least favorite episode of the season.

“Then again, thinking about Crowey’s comment on first impressions, I’ll wait until the end of this season to confirm this thought.”

Wise choice. Thank you, Debbab. Loved reading your impressions, opinion and comment-review!

          1. Since Amara had the mark is she the first born? Remember before there were male dieties, the female image reigned supreme with primitive man and in Mesopotamia. If Lucifer was the first to bear the mark, then perhaps it goes to first born children down the line, including Dean. Perhaps, the writers were correcting canon and not retro fitting it? Michael may have bought into God’s marketing and taken on the role of first born. If there is a birth order amongst the angels. So if Amara and God are siblings who is their parent(S)? Remember there are gods older than the Christian-Judeo traditions. Oh my!

            1. This! It is possible after Lucifer’s fall that God delivered the safekeeping of Heaven to Michael. However, I doubt there is any parent of Amara and God.

            2. “Since Amara had the mark is she the first born? Remember before there were male dieties, the female image reigned supreme with primitive man and in Mesopotamia.”

The birth order when it comes to the Mark has so far, only been established in relation to Cain and Abel (Dean and Sam). God gave Lucifer the Mark, not because he was the first born, but “his most valued Lieutenant” (“Brother’s Keeper”). Therefore, I don’t think Amara having the Mark is what makes her the first born. I do think she could be, because like you mentioned, female deities reigned supreme before organized religion got involved. It also makes sense that the female principle came first, like, Gaia, the mother of all.

“If Lucifer was the first to bear the mark, then perhaps it goes to first born children down the line, including Dean. Perhaps, the writers were correcting canon and not retro fitting it?”

According to canon, birth order isn’t the reason Lucifer received the Mark. I honestly don’t believe this canon can be corrected in anyway that makes sense. To be blunt, I think it would be bad writing. If the writers can’t continue the story without annihilating a piece of canon as important as the great plan of the apocalypse, the vessels and the very reason their characters are born for, there’s a problem. I believe it was a mistake, the kind Buckner and Leming are unfortunately notorious for.

“Michael may have bought into God’s marketing and taken on the role of first born. If there is a birth order amongst the angels.”

It’s not a story that would ever make sense to me. It again destroys the character of Michael and makes him into a gullible idiot who bought into a lie. He’s the first born and I don’t see why this established fact should be questioned, challenged, erased, modified, corrected and destroyed. What’s so important about Lucifer that he gets to drag the first archangel down from his throne? He’s been the little brother for 5 seasons of mythology and he should stay in his place lol.

“So if Amara and God are siblings who is their parent(S)? Remember there are gods older than the Christian-Judeo traditions. Oh my!”

In a lot of non Christian-Judeo traditions, the first god doesn’t have parents. She or he just appears and then starts creating everything else. In some case, one being emerges from the void, and is split into female and male. Could be what happened with Amara and God. I like that idea 🙂

I loved it-I thought Dean/Jensen looked devastated the whole episode. He also looked transfixed when Amara entered. They are doing the whole bond thing very low key-kind of like how they did the affect of the MOC on Dean. (Remember how Sam was all oh no and we the audience thought-well hell, Dean seems to be handling it pretty well.) I wish they had made it a little more obvious, both the MOC’s affects and the Amara’s affects on Dean 🙂

I agree. Jensen did look transfixed when Amara entered. She also stopped to look at him when she noticed him. I too think they played the effect of the Mark kind of low-key. I do think Amara’s effect on Dean is less subtle. In “Our Little World”, he turned into a puppet on a string when she touched him and he looked almost possessed when she was walking away. I thought it was pretty dramatic actually and I really loved Jensen’s performance.

When they are in a room together I agree-less subtle for sure. But when he is away from her I dont really sense anything. Does that mean as long as he isn’t in her presence he is fine?

In “Into the Mystic”, he was unable to sleep and it was heavily implied that it was because of Amara. The whole episode was about his longing for her. Otherwise, we don’t really get to see the effect Amara has on him when she’s far away, you,re right about that. I guess they want us to continue to believe that she’s still keeping him up at night without taking the time to show it to us. They could do more, like showing Dean getting tired, using sleeping pills, being out of it, something…

Dean is a hunter and intellectually, he WANTS to kill The Darkness, I’m sure of that.
His problem is, she still affects him physically and mentally when she’s afar (sleeplessness, a vulnerability other monsters can detect in him) and when she’s close he’s truly lost to himself.

Look at Claudette Colbert as Cleopatra in the 1934 black and white film wearing in her unadorned black mourning robe. See if you can catch your breath or rip your eyes away from that woman-goddess?

Sigh. BuckLeming strikes again. I try to ignore who the writers are before I watch an episode. I usually know beforehand when it’s Robbie Thompson because his episodes are always heavily advertised as Robbiesodes but in general, I try to stay impartial and wait for the finished product. I don’t dislike BuckLeming half as much as a LOT of people seem to in this fandom. They can write really good episodes but when they’re bad, they’re terrible, and they also torpedo years of canon history. * shakes head * I’m therefore not surprised they’re the ones to blame for this.
