Okay I’ve seen ‘First Born’

What did I think and what were my first impressions?

I thought Cain was a great introduction, and I liked the writers filtering in the story of Cain and Abel and that it was a sad demise for Abel. I also noted how violent Cain was and how many people he had slaughtered for his own gain. I also loved the introduction of the knights of hell and that Abaddon was the one to get away unscathed.

I also have to mention Sam and Cas how they are beginning to click as buddies and are working together amicably to sort out the mess they are in. Again Sam went and endured yet more pain from the trials in getting out the remaining Grace left behind by Gadreel. To put in a spell to summon him. It was a shame that Cas never had enough to work the spell. So they decided to abandon the task. Sam looked heart broken and depressed. I found it interesting that he didn’t feel himself worthy of living and still wanted out of this world, and would have done anything to get away from it. The hug between them was kinda of awkward as Cas simply didn’t know how to respond. But it was still a moment not to be missed. I thought at the beginning the peanut butter and Jam sequence was humorous and a well thought piece of script to insert. How different and noticeable Cas was, and what new traits he’d picked up on, when his grace returned. Like the Jam tasting of molecules and didn’t suit his taste buds, if he has any now.

I love Dean and Crowley together, I have to say and their partnership is very different. I liked how Crowley continued to play Dean for a fool, but Dean by the end had played him at his own game more or less. I again found myself admiring Crowley for collaring Dean about his worthiness and Dean replying oh great’ are you gonna get all touchy feely now too. The problem is mate, nobody hates you more than you do, believe me I’ve tried. I am also interested in learning about the tattoo on Dean’s arm as in the end scene it was bothering him and leaving its mark behind for sure. Is Dean now immortal, can he live for ever? Is Dean a demon now too, and Sam not a hybrid any longer have those tables turned?

Ikeke you were right, I did walk away from this liking it. I do love my mythology, and your getting to know me well. I found the demons outside Cains house a bit cheap I think that was my only real negative. I also loved Kara who reminded me of Ellen in many ways. Damned demon ending her days, women do not last long on this show. The fight sequence from Jensen was epic, and will be remembered for a long time to come. The work he put in won’t easily be forgotten. I hope we stay on a role now, and for the vote I am giving this an 8.5 – 9 out of 10. Mainly for the lack of Sam screen time. The boys being apart, and the demons surrounding Cain’s house. I did adore the actor who played Cain. I hope we see him again. What did you all think? I have also been working on Supernaturally Devoted and put a review up for Road Trip and will be working on a proper one for this episode too. So don’t forget to pop over when you can, they would love to see you. Entries have been slack lately but I hope this will change as my head is beginning to take in much more notes so watch this space. My show is back!!!

  1. I think the interesting thing no one has mentioned is this: Cas doesn’t know about the Mark of Cain. And what will he say when or if he finds out because Dean (Mr. Secret, himself) may decide not to tell him.
That is true. But if that mark is causing him pain, he won’t be able to hide that so easily. Painful pain isn’t so easy to mask. Imagine if the boys are on a case and his arm suddenly cramps how’s he going to get around it. ‘Oh I just got this rash on my arm that’s giving me hell it won’t go away’.

Or, and this is a likely scenario, Cas may see it or sense it before Dean says anything. I predict Cas will be very angry about this. Here he is in this episode trying to talk one of the pigheaded Winchesters down and the other goes out and picks up a demon mark. And from Cain, The Father of Murder, no less.
I bet of course he will sense it. I also think this was why Gadreel wanted Cas out of the bunker as he knew he would reveal who he really was. I can’t believe how easily Dean went blundering in to obtain that mark without considering the consequences. He didn’t even flinch why was he trying so damned hard to be the hero just to take down Abaddon. I wish the writers wouldn’t make the boys look so stupid sometimes. Its getting silly now.

We’re all so busy worrying about what the Mark means. The writers may just decide to have Cas tell us what it means along with his reaction. And what about when Sam finds out?
Exactly what happens when Sam does find out. Some are thinking that Dean maybe heading downstairs again to be the king of hell. Not sure about this one. But that mark does have some mythology connection to the arc sure of this. Dean I think this time is the key to it all.

    1. Why do the Winchesters always run towards death is the question Cas posed to Sam. He seems to have talked Sam off the ledge, only to find Dean rushing towards something perhaps darker than death, Can’t Cas sense the changes in people? Don’t think he will be a happy angel when he does find out. He must know the implications. Unless he has borders and does not scan Dean. Dean is affected by the mark seared into his arm as he grimaces in pain. He may choose to hide it as Sam did the affects from the trials, but eventually all comes pouring out again. Ah secrets between these two continue to provide much to us! Of course, Dean could be forthright and we just find out the implications through Cas’ narrative. Oh wait, that would make Cas the new Bobby?
I know, Ikeke did say Cas would be pissed and rightly so. I don’t know how Dean is going to get around this when they get back together. You can’t mask pain that easily. Does that mark GLOW, as that will too be difficult to hide under his layers of clothing? Those arm cramps also remind me of when he came back from purgatory with Benny in him, and gave me the shivers again. Also when Cas pulled him up out of hell, that mark on his shoulder. So its not the first mark to be engraved on Dean’s body. But its where its going to send him is worrying me. I can’t help but think DANGER!!!

  2. Time for a Garth episode as Crowley is off searching the deep blue ocean for a jaw bone and probably doing other demonic things to prepare for his campaign. The writers like to break the intensity to prevent burn out IMO.
Something someone said on the forum yesterday was how come Crowley can swim in the ocean looking for the jaw bone when the sea contains salt in the water. Demons don’t like salt. So how are the writers going to get around this loop hole. I will be interested in watching this. At least the boys will be back together I wonder how they will meet up. I wonder if it will be like in The Mentalist and they go to the same place not knowing the other is going to be there. I keep thinking that Cas is going to Zap Dean back into the bunker. Thoughts …..

I love your expression ‘burn out’, very original … 😉

  3. I think its gonna be interesting to see what Cain’s mark does to Dean whether it’ll give him added strengths besides being able wield the demons blade.
K welcome to the group great to see you.
This is what I’m wondering too he wouldn’t go through all this for nothing in return, not an ounce of trouble from something so evil as Cain’s mark. I am very suspicious of it.

Here’s me still hoping Benny the Vampire somehow returns from purgatory either in Supernatural or is included in the spin off somehow ;’-(
I would like to see Ty show up in the spin-off. I think he won’t come back from purgatory as he fit in down there and didn’t enjoy being topside. So not sure if the writers intend to bring him back or not. I thought I read some where he was coming back. But must have imagined it.

    2. Thinking that the power Dean has from the mark may require him to “save Sam” like Cain did for Abel.
I hadn’t thought of this before. But I was so hoping for Sam to save Dean from the mark, not the other way around. But there is something in the Cain and Abel story about Cain killing Dean and the Lucifer connection. Again gave me the chills… What ever way around it is I bet this will lead us into the finale.

      1. Or..and this is what I like, it may require Sam to save Dean from the Mark or what it might do to him. ( I wonder if the writers will come full circle and have Sam sacrifice himself to save Dean or take the Mark from him). That will be interesting if it’s Sam’s actual choice to do so for Dean and makes that choice clear to him.
You are all thinking along the same lines as me. I so want SAM to save DEAN after last season in Sam not looking for his brother. Please writers let this happen for once. If the writers think along those lines it would be a fantastic finale. I knew that mark had some significance but not sure where they would take it or what it would imply for Dean in the long term. Its already hurting him so weeks away what’s it gonna to do him, if he has to live with it. Were still waiting for him to go dark, and this is obviously were it goes. I wonder if Dean will end up going on a killing spree as Cain did.

  4. Cain’s mark is less of a tatoo and more of a burn scar. Remember its origin is from Lucifer- the light giver- who seared the mark into Cain’s skin. It reminds me of the binding scar that Sam had when Meg possessed him. Dean is the “freak” and Sam is apparently clean of all supernatural influence demonic or angelic, Role reversal. The thing about Crowley is that indeed Cain did muzzle his ability to speak. Cain is older than Crowley so more powerful, however Shepard played the tea drinking scene so cleverly that it is supposed to be ambiguous. I was most disturbed when Crowley, a demon, makes the sign of the cross. Is it bad writing or as I suspect Crowley is more layered than we think and his humanity popped out? But more about Crowley when I get it together and send in an article to supernaturallydevoted- the other blog. I do think the demon raid was a bit cheesy especially when Dean tries to block the door with furniture, He knows that will not work. Where is salt when you need it? Also I think there was a continuity issue with the head demon’s face wounds-were they always on the same side in every shot? I am sure there were quality parts of scenes and dialogue that were cut for time purposes. Remember we only get to see the final product. Yes, it was an epic fight scene. And what time “Sam” was on screen was not wasted.
Yes your right debbab it does remind me of the mark in born under a bad sign S2. How do we no for sure Sam is cured of the demon blood, the syringe only extracted the grace? Didn’t it? It is role reversal too. When the fake stuff was being talked about I kept thinking about his human side or has all this been washed away now. He’s back to what he once was just as evil. Or he never really changed? Exactly what I thought about Dean and those demons. It was cheesy. Your thinking along the same lines as me. I thought that facial make-up on the demon was a bit over done if I’m honest. It looked very thick as though more layers had been added. Yeap I guess many minutes are cut for time constraints, 42 minutes isn’t long when you think about it. I had a job to keep an eye on the fight scene as it was so fast and if you blinked you missed it. I was so looking forward to it and it didn’t disappoint. Jensen can really kick ass 🙂 Yes I did miss Sam’s screen time, and hoped Cas would talk to Sam more and get him to open up. A few words were spoken and that’s it.

  5. I’m curious too about how the mark will effect Dean and whether the tables will be turned. I’m also wondering how Cas healed Sam “completely” considering extracting Gadreel’s grace took him back to a state he was immediately after the trials.
Hi, and welcome back good to see you again.
I keep thinking of long term effects with that mark, and how it will affect him. We know how Sam is with the demon blood. I think taking Sam back to the beginning where it all started seemed logical. When you think that’s where his last thoughts remained. It felt natural to go back there. Many were saying his suicidal thoughts may come back. So at least this has been consistent. There are still a few awkward area’s I’m not sure of too.

    1. Not so sure Cas got all the grace out since his glance at the PBJ reminded him of what it is to be human and that the ends do not always justify the means. Getting all of the grace would have killed Sam. Now suddenly Cas can heal Sam of the conditions caused by the trials whereas before he could not? Perhaps that was because now Sam is not in a coma. Maybe there are saving the piece of grace in Sam as a nugget for the future or it was sloppy writing.
This is what I’ve been thinking about Gadreel and Cas for ages, and finally someone is on the same wavelength as me. Why could Gadreel heal Sam and Cas could not. I wondered if it was because he possessed Sam and healed him from the inside? There is something Cas is keeping back, I am sure of it. Sam sure was wanting Cas to go in to his neck further and Cas was reluctant too. Was it more than he didn’t want Sam to die. It could have been the coma that was preventing him, good point 😉

      1. Actually he couldn’t save Sam before because Cas was human then and never heard dean’s call. By the time he heard from Dean, Gadreel was already in residence. When he initially diagnosed Sam he had no idea what was happening to Sam and therefore couldn’t cure him, especially not knowing what’s happening to Sam and if it was a side effect of the trials. By the time he got to Sam now, he was mostly healed of the side effects of the trial. Gadreel at least did that much. All that was left was the residue of grace left over from his occupation (probably left behind by angels so that they can easily find their hosts again if they have to vacate them for some reason. Which is entirely in canon as they used the leftover grace in Raphael’s old host to summon him.) By removing that bit of grace from Sam it was reverting him back to the state where/when Gadreel found him. So, do I think Cas lied about the leftover grace? No. He told Sam there was some left and that every time he healed him it went away. So there was a tiny amount left and Cas got rid of it by healing Sam the rest of the way. Sam is entirely human now. Entirely!
Good point, as the season goes on you sometimes forget these finer points as your concentrating on the current stuff more 😉 I think we have to thank Gadreel for what he did achieve as he did stick to his side of the bargain. But does Dean still owe him that favor? will Gad be back. We know Dean said to Cas he’s a dead man walking. But after all a deal is a deal. But what I would like to know is why was grace left behind. Does this happen on a regular basis or is it now and then. Does something go wrong when an angel departs its host if particles are left behind? I so got this too that they were reverting back to Sam’s original state of mind, which was why he was having suicidal tendencies again. This seemed a logical move to me. But I still have no idea where those thoughts originally steamed from? As in the finale he was up beat that the gates of heaven and hell were going to close, then its all doom and gloom. But this has only taken away the remaining grace its not touched the demon blood, so I don’t get why were thinking he’s TOTALLY human now? please expand …

        1. During the trials, Cas was still an angel. He said he could not heal Sam as Sam was changing on a sub atomic molecular level. So if Sam reverted back to that level, now Cas can heal him. Methinks it is a convenient recon for the writers.
Good point! But I still don’t get how Gadreel could heal Sam and Cas couldn’t because Sam was changing on a sub atomic molecular level. Cas is a Seraph or was until he became an angel with another angels grace. Gadreel was not as powerful as Cas by any stretch of the imagination. So they are saying that Gad was more powerful than Cas. I don’t buy it.

      2. Yeah, it didn’t make sense to me that when Sam was closer to healed, Cas had to heal him a little at a time, but now that he was back to where he was right after the trials (I assume he meant at the church since no coma) suddenly he could heal him completely. There’s just something not quite kosher about that whole scenario. I suspect we’re going to find out Cas fudged somewhere there or sloppy writing.
I did think along these lines too. I don’t think Cas has been entirely honest, at least we all are smelling a rat!!

  6. “The problem is mate, nobody hates you more than you do, believe me I’ve tried. “
My favorite line from the episode! So heartbreaking. Even Crowley doesn’t hate him as much as he does. How sad is that?

They sure did leave the best until last, didn’t they. Its like since Crowley’s been more human its like he’s almost on the same wave length then he goes back to being his sly old self. He admits to thinking a lot of Sam. But I also think he has a soft spot for Dean. There is something about Crowley even when he’s free from them he can’t but help and go back. You think someone locked up for two months wouldn’t want to go back to his kidnappers. Why?

I actually enjoyed the boys apart. I actually felt that I needed it as much as they did. There’s been so much tension watching them because we knew Deans secret that its nice not to have to deal with that.
Me too, many don’t like the boys being apart. But sometimes as long as its progressing the story and adding growth to them it doesn’t over bother me. Its sad their not together, but we know they’ll be back soon enough. Its fun to see them interact with others too.

I don’t think Dean is immortal. Cain is immortal because he was cursed by God to walk the earth for all time with the mark. I think Dean gets the power to wield the blade and all the problems that brings. Power corrupts but hopefully Dean being the “righteous man” will keep him from succumbing to it.
Good point, I had forgotten about the “righteous man” thing it slipped my mind. But then how’s he gonna get it back to Cain. As by all accounts Cain will call him and wants Dean to end his life with that Blade? So does this mark stay with Dean or die with Cain?

I gave this episode a 9-9.5/10 -mainly because I felt the Sam and Cas scenes were at times awkward. Although maybe they wanted them to seem awkward? Not sure LOL
Again I think as you say they were meant to feel awkward, we don’t know why yet, its just nice to see Sam mix with others which is a real treat.

I loved drunk extra scruffy Dean, Cain was great just shucking corn as Dean threw bad guys all over the kitchen! Crowley and Dean have great chemistry-I couldn’t believe how many times I laughed during an otherwise very serious episode. It was a great balance of seriousness and humor. When Crowley couldn’t speak and Dean says in all seriousness “You’ve got to teach me that!” i just cracked up.
Yes, Drunk Dean sure did go down well. The corn just made me laugh, how it was sitting there without being disturbed whilst god knows what was being thrown on that table. And the table was still standing. It sure was a great balance. Crowley not speaking was priceless. He looked really baffled that he couldn’t get a word out. Would Cain actually teach Dean his top secrets?? It was very funny. I also loved Cain as a bee keeper there was something rather solitary about it. I also loved that location spell which they used in season 4 when Ruby tried to find Dean.

Best episode of the season for sure. Last weeks may have been the second best IMHO. Maybe the writers are on a roll?
I think last weeks had the edge. This was good. One thing I noticed was that when ever Crowley gets thumped he never gets back up and retaliates he just knifed that demon. I also loved the shaking tea-cup moment and the sly grin, superb. I so hope this keeps up but Garth back next week I have my doubts.

    1. I’m going to have to agree. I really like this one and think it was much better than last week’s episode which I also really like. (I still love Dog Dean Afternoon and I’m rethinking Slumber Party). I often feel differently about an episode after watching it a couple of times. If I can watch it a couple more times and still feel good about seeing it a few more times, then it usually becomes a favorite and I have about 4-5 real favorites each season. This is definitely going on that list.
I liked it, but thought first time around it didn’t grow on me. then watched you-tube clips and really got a better feeling for it. Last weeks just had so much drama for me it really did grip my imagination and kept me watching, this week it wasn’t as strong. Neither of those two I’m fond of. There not my favorites of this season by a long way. The first half was really slow in building up even around the mythology. But this side of the season the pacing is so much better and each scene is really polished. I’m like you I have around the same good and superb ones, and others that I don’t care for and those two are on that list.

Favorite scene is Cain drinking a beer and being encouraging to Dean (“You’re doing fine!”) while he’s being thrown around.
I’m not sure yet what my favorite scene is. The end scene with Dean and Crowley was really great with Dean worried about the mark on his arm and it hurting him. I liked the scene in the bar when Dean flirted with the waitress in the diner and I thought not again Dean!! Sam’s scene too with the syringe was so SAD that he still wants to die, and that Dean took away his choice.

Second fave: Sam hugging Cas. It was just weird. Dean doesn’t even hug Cas and hes more touchy freely than Sam.
I think Crowley not being able to speak and Dean wanting to know how to do it was second.

And I noticed that when Sam is just himself, he likes to sharply tease the people he likes. He tried teasing Cas a little but Cas isn’t used to it and didn’t know that’s what he was doing.
This is what I love about Sam, how soft he is. He really does like Cas a lot now and it shows. This was why I thought the hugging scene appeared awkward as Cas didn’t know how to hug. He wasn’t used to hugging and was unsure of how to respond. But with Sammy’s guidance he was well away.

I still think Crowley’s fear of Cain was real although I think there’s some debate on it. Some say he was faking being scared. Idk, he looked pretty scared to me. I’m not seeing why people think he was faking.
I thought it was believable. It was so unlike Crowley to be scared. Again I think this could be part of his human side coming through. They are not used to seeing Crowley different!

Im not sure. I believed it when I watched it but now that we know he played Dean it makes sense that he was faking it? The more I think about it The King of Hell doesn’t get scared of anyone. he wasn’t scared of Abbadon in the church-I AM YOUR KING!-so maybe it was all fake. Think about it-Crowley’s hand shaking? LOL
It could be as he was playing Dean for a fool, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s faking it. But then since he’s been more humanized is he any different? Or did he fake all this too? As to me he’s just his usual old self nothing has really changed. But then Cain was the first born, and fierce Crowley did look scared when he killed all those demons in the house….

Oh man, if he was faking all that.. He seriously needs a sharp smack from Dean.

Also there’s some debate about whether or not Cas lied about not finding Gadreel with that spell. I’m starting to rethink that scene. He did seem to have a serious beef with Gadreel and he’d want to protect Sam and Dean from their own actions, so he has a good motivation for running off and taking care of Gadreel on his own.
But didn’t he say to Sam something about letting both of them down and stuff that he wanted to be loyal to them. I can’t see Cas double crossing them again. But then he was really mad last week with Gadreel. You’ve got me thinking now? 😉

            1. One of his motivations could be protecting the brothers from a fight with Gadreel. Or he might think taking care of the Gadreel problem will make them happy. It would be one less thing for them to worry about. His reasoning would be different from a human even though he used to be one.
If he’s protecting them I could understand it. But when I re-watched yesterday there was something about his smile that felt off. It’s the moment after the last syringe goes in. We get a few words from him after he looks at his sandwich and how being human has made him think more about humans in general. If Cas is up to something, I feel its more than protecting them. He even said himself to Sam I’ve betrayed you and your brother before. He just appears very off. When he put that syringe back in that box that of his smile gave me chills. Was he lying?
